Casey Anthony: NOT GUILTY, NANCY GRACE & THE OUTRAGE

By Geno McGahee

It is rare for a trial to capture the imagination of the public to the extent that the Casey Anthony trial did. Any time that there is a death of a child, the public looks. The majority of the onlookers that followed this trial were parents and it appealed to them because they related the incident to their own lives. Nancy Grace has spoken of her children numerous times in relation to this case and the callers that phoned her show would often mention them as well. This trial became personal for so many people and that is why there is so much outrage as I write this.

You could see the anxiety on the face of Casey Anthony as she sat there at 2 PM today, awaiting the verdict. Her father, George, sat in the crowd with an equal look of anxiety on his face. Keep in mind that he was thrown under the bus by his daughter with allegations of molestation and covering up the drowning death of young Caylee, but he stood by Casey.

Although the majority felt that Casey would be going away for a long time, RSR has been following the case and has done numerous polls, asking just where you stood on the matter, and we had a statistic of 11% of people that felt that Casey was innocent, and those that supported her were very animate.

What really helped Casey was how she looked. She is very attractive and it’s hard to imagine a person that is attractive and upper middle class committing something so horrid. As a parent, I too looked at my children and wondered what could possess somebody to do something like this, especially to a 2 year old…a defenseless child that looks to their parent for protection. It was such a terrible crime that I was hard to believe that she could kill Caylee, and that helped her. She wasn’t seen as a monster. She was seen as a mother that made some stupid choices.

Also helping Casey was the molestation allegations. It is an unfortunate fact that many women have been the victim of some sort of sexual abuse throughout their lives, and most do not come forward. Victims of this abuse may lean toward Casey’s side, and see themselves in this position. George, whether he is innocent or guilty, does have the police man vibe. He can be intimidating and it may have been easy for the jury and supporters of Casey to imagine him as the molester.

There has been plenty of feedback on my Nancy Grace article, and how she impacted public sentiment towards Casey Anthony. Grace’s aggressive approach and charisma has made her a star and she is always fighting a cause. Her latest cause was Casey Anthony and getting justice for the 2 year old Caylee, and her audience were steadfast behind her, and although she didn’t get the conviction, she didn’t lose from an entertainment standpoint. She can now talk about the injustice of the case and that should keep her show going for some time.

Casey Anthony, 25, guilty or innocent in reality, has been tried and released by the system that we are supposed to trust. Whether we trust it or not and whether this decision was correct or not, Anthony should be allowed to continue with her life, away from the media and public, that are still demanding blood.

Although we all have our thoughts about her guilt or innocence, the court has spoken. It’s a done deal and Casey is free.
