Fight Predictions: Antonio Tarver vs. Danny Green

Compiled by Mike Plunkett

The upcoming clash between former 3-time light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver and the current IBO cruiserweight powerhouse Danny Green is mostly perceived as yet another exercise of human offering to the spirits Down Under, but the reality of the matter may in fact prove different. It’s a fact that the ‘Green Machine’ and Co. like to pick aging fruit but this latest choice may prove to be a dire miscalculation. The latest choice is more than an aging former titlist, he’s a former 3-time light heavyweight champion coming off a solid win at heavyweight, and by all accounts, up for the challenge with something to prove. Will remnants of youth and the home advantage prevail or will we see a demonstration of some old magic? RSR’s elite team of writers, interviewers and pugilistic prognosticators provide you with their expert opinions on the outcome.

Sean Farrell

I have to take Green in this one. Tarver had a great run and has a deadly left, but Green has surpassed Tarver in my opinion and I expect Green to win by 7th round TKO stoppage.

“Bad” Brad Berkwitt

Danny Green by UD…. Tarver will win a few rounds, but in the end, scores will be in the 116-112 range for Green.

Donald C. Stewart

Green is the younger, hungrier and has the better recent fight record. For me I think this will not go the distance and Green will stop Tarver before the halfway mark. If he doesn’t I may have to go and find a mystic time traveler to help me predict better….

Geno McGahee

Danny Green to win this fight via close decision. He is going to have trouble finding Tarver, but the advanced age of Tarver and his inactivity will cost him and Green will push forward winning and ugly decision.

Gina L. Caliboso

A 42 year old Tarver goes up against 38 year old Danny Green for the IBO Cruiserweight title.. Tarver’s last bout was last year and resulted in a 10 round unanimous decision. Green’s last bout resulted in a 12 round unanimous decision. Perhaps both fighters are inspired by Hopkins’ strong presence in the category of the over 35 boxer. I predict that Tarver will win by a 12 round unanimous decision because of experience and overall skill.

Danny Green’s last six wins haven’t fooled me. There has been a distinct angle to each win and not coincidentally one of them had absolutely no business fighting from a medical standpoint. For the most part they are aging natural super middleweights or light heavyweights, long past their fighting best. Ironically, Antonio Tarver is a natural light heavyweight long past his best however his pedigree and track record for grit serve him well this time around. The consensus is that Green will at some point bludgeon Tarver with a wild barrage of shots, but in order to do that he has to deal with the reach, jab and southpaw stance of the confident ‘Magic Man’. Adding to this dilemma, Green is coming off a career threatening operation last winter, the sort of under-the-hood work that sometimes takes something indiscernible away from an athlete. Look for class to tell, and for Antonio Tarver to disassemble Green after from the mid-point onward. Antonio Tarver via 11th round TKO.
