Amir Khan: Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather JR or Lamont Peterson – Boxing Showdown

By Geno McGahee

In an IBF eliminator, Lamont Peterson, 29-1-1, 15 KO’s, knocked out Victor Cayo in the final round, clearing the way for a shot at the champion, Amir Khan. Khan is currently weighing his options, but may be back in action on HBO in December and it could very well be against the able and tough Peterson.

Peterson fought to a draw with Victor Ortiz, the current WBC Welterweight Champion, and the man that is facing off with Floyd Mayweather, JR., in September. Peterson showed his grit in getting off the floor with Ortiz to fight back to a draw and he will need that toughness if he plans on stepping into the ring with Khan.

The performance on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights against Cayo was impressive. It was a competitive fight, but with both fighters hurt and tired at the end, Peterson put in the better effort and got the stoppage with a late rally.

Khan, fresh off his knockout win over Zab Judah, is becoming a superstar in the sport. Already a national hero in the UK, Khan is fighting his way into mainstream America and has his focus on Floyd Mayweather, JR. It would be a huge fight for boxing and one of those big events that will really help the sport. After the Pacquiao-Mayweather continual tease, we deserve a treat.

Lamont Peterson is a fighter with a lot of will and heart, but it is yet to be seen if he can be competitive with a superstar like Khan. It is likely that the match will be made for Khan’s next fight.
