Manny Pacquiao Vs Floyd Mayweather JR: Boxing’s Biggest Fight & Disappointment

By Geno McGahee

Boxing doesn’t have a lot of superstars, and with the recent loss of Amir Khan, the “future” is uncertain. We focus back on the current scene and the two biggest names that have elected not to fight each other, Manny Pacquiao, 54-3-2, 38 KO’s, and Floyd Mayweather, JR., 42-0, 26 KO’s.

It is the fight that the public wants but the excitement is fading. The recent performance of Pacquiao against Juan Manuel Marquez, where he should have lost but got the nod from the judges, makes the outcome of a Mayweather, JR., fight not as debatable. Most boxing fans have shifted over to Floyd to come out victorious and you can bet that if the fight happens in May, which some are contending it will, the casinos will make “Money Mayweather” a heavy favorite. Mike Tyson was interviewed prior to the Pacquiao-Marquez fight and said what most of us feel. There is no reason why these two fighters should not be fighting. The public demand has been there and they are recognized as the two best fighters in the game, arguably. The more that time passes, the less these two will have left, and maybe that is what Floyd is waiting for.

Pacquiao has been on a tear but he is not what he used to be. Either through lack of interest or father time intervening, his speed and defense haven’t been what they were. Against Marquez, he couldn’t find a way to penetrate the defense and do any real damage. Marquez is a very skilled boxer with timing, a similar fighter to Floyd, but not nearly as good and not nearly as big. It is surprising that Floyd didn’t quickly agree to a fight with Pacquiao the night after the Marquez fight.

Pacquiao – Mayweather, JR., is still the fight that the public demands, but it has lost some of its luster. Now they are speaking of a Mayweather, JR., – Miguel Cotto bout, which is just another example of the two big names exchanging opponents to see who can beat them better. It proves nothing. The two need to fight and settle the matter.
