Shawn Cox – Wayne Braithwaite: SHOCKING FIGHT RESULT

The biggest fight card in the English-speaking Caribbean took place Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown Guyana. Five WBC CABOFE champions were crowned on a show which delivered an absolutely exciting night of fistic action. In the main event, a new star was born when hard-punching Shawn “the Sniper” Cox (16-1, 15 KOs) of Barbados knocked out local hero and former world champion Wayne “Big truck” Braithwaite (24-5, 20 KOs) in the first round of the scheduled 12 round championship fight. Up for grabs was the WBC CABOFE heavyweight title. Both boxers were moving up from cruiserweight to challenge for the vacant heavyweight title which offers the winner an opportunity to enter the WBC world cup tournament which is scheduled to start in May.

Cox weighed in at 209lbs while Braithwaite tipped the scales at 211lbs. At the sound of the bell both fighters met each other in the center of the ring and “the Sniper” offloaded a huge overhand left which missed its target. The second combination by the Barbadian bomber found its mark and dropped the hometown boy for an eight count. The former champ seemed to loading up to return the favour, but was sent to the canvas again with powerful combination by the current WBC CABOFE cruiserweight champ. Braithewaite tried to defend himself from the relentless Sniper, but was floored for the third and final time.

In other results Guyana’s middleweight champion Edmund DeClou (10-1-1, 2 KOs) won WBC CABOFE version of the middleweight title when his Trinidadian opponet Kevin Placide (12-6-1, 7 KOs) retired in the 9th round. Placid who was down in round one was totally outclassed and quit 35 seconds into the 9th frame.

Barbadian Miguel “Hands of Stone” Antoine reclaimed his WBC CABOFE super light weight title with a 12 round unanimous decision over hometown boy Revlon lake. Miguel stays undefeated with a 17-0-1, 9 KOs record while Lake falls to 6-6-2 with 1 KO.

American-based Guyanese Elton Dharry (8-5-1, 3 KOs) knocked out Barbados-based Guyanese Selwyn Lett (2-3, 1 KO) in round one to successfully defend his WBC CABOFE bantamweight title.

In a all Guyana affair, Dexter Marques (9-2, 3 KOs) had tougher than expected fight to defeat Orlando Rogers (5-13, 0 KOs) with a 12 round unanimous decision. Although Marques controlled the fight Rogers sent the new champ to the canvas in the 7th. Marques claimed the WBC CABOFE flyweight title.

All of the winners on the night have booked there places in the WBC world cup tournament which can see the loser of the first fight in the tournament earning around US $30,000.
