1970s Heavyweights Stars Ron Lyle and Earnie Shavers to Attend 2010 Hall of Fame Weekend

Hall of Fame Weekend June 10-13th

The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today 1970s heavyweight stars Ron Lyle and Earnie Shavers will attend festivities planned for the 21st Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend set for June 10-13th.

“Both Ron Lyle and Earnie Shavers brought plenty of excitement to the heavyweight division in the 1970s,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “We’re looking forward to welcoming them back to Canastota.”

Lyle turned pro in 1971 and during his career posted a 43-7-1 (31 KOs) record that includes wins over Vicente Rondon, Buster Mathis, Oscar Bonavena, Jimmy Ellis, Shavers, Joe Bugner and Scott LeDoux. He lost to Muhammad Ali in a 1975 world title shot. Lyle’s 1976 bout with George Foreman (KO by 5) was one of the most exciting in heavyweight history and was The Ring magazine’s “Fight of the Year.”

Considered by many as the hardest puncher in heavyweight history, Shavers was a top contender of the1970s. During his career he compiled an impressive 73-14-1 (67KOs) record and challenged both Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes in title bouts. Shavers registered wins over Jimmy Young, Jimmy Ellis and Ken Norton among others.

The June 10-13th Hall of Fame Induction Weekend will feature over 20 exciting events including a banquet, Madison Square Garden night, parade, golf tournament, cocktail party, and the official induction ceremony honoring the Class of 2010. Living inductees to be honored at the Official Induction Ceremony on Sunday, June 13th are light flyweight champion Jung-Koo Chang (South Korea), featherweight champion Danny “Little Red” Lopez (USA), manager Shelly Finkel (USA), referee / commissioner Larry Hazzard (USA), promoter Wilfried Sauerland (Germany), matchmaker Bruce Trampler (USA) and journalist Ed Schuyler (USA). Posthumous inductees will also be honored.

Over 40 boxing stars are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities. In addition to Lyle and Shavers, other stars slated to appear include Nino Benvenuti, Carmen Basilio, Tony DeMarco, Ken Norton, Aaron “The Hawk” Pryor, Angelo Dundee, Leon Spinks, Gerry Cooney, Lou Duva and many others.
