RSR Boxing Results: Rafael Marquez stops Israel Vazquez in 3

Marquez stops Vazquez

Rafael Marquez, 39-5, 35 KO’s, scored a third round stoppage over Israel Vazquez, 44-5, 32 KO’s, due in large part to the gushing cuts over both of the eyes of Vazquez.  In the first round, Vazquez’s left eye was cut wide open from either a right hand or possibly a head butt.  After that, Vazquez was mentally unable to compete and a head butt caused the other eye to suffer a similar cut.  Marquez, sensing the despair, attacked and Vazquez crumbled to the floor in severe pain from the pain.  After a barrage of shots, the referee called a halt to the action and Marquez came away with the victory.  There was no way that the fight would have gone beyond the third round with the horrendous cut over the eye of Vazquez.  It is worse than the cut that Vitali Klitschko suffered at the hands of Lennox Lewis.  It was wide open and had it gone any farther, he may have suffered permanent damage.

Historically, the fighters are 2-2 and it will probably end that way.  I can’t see the point in Vazquez continuing his career after this fight and with the obvious permanent damage to his eyes.

Ruslan Chagaev Defeats Kali Meehan

Former WBA Heavyweight Champion, Ruslan Chagaev, 26-1-1, 17 KO’s, out-boxed the larger Kali Meehan, 35-4, 29 KO’s, winning the WBA Title Eliminator, and is now in line to challenge the champion, David Haye.  Chagaev was just sharper and maintained a good pace, leading to the unanimous decision by scores of 118-110, 117-111, and 117-112.
