Yuriorkis Gamboa, 23-0, 16 KO’s, outpointed a tough and determined opponent in Darleys Perez, 28-1, 19 KO’s, taking the unanimous decision by scores of 116-111 (twice) and 115-112. Gamboa just went through the motions and did enough to win, but he is not the force that he once appeared to be. He seemed disinterested throughout much of the fight and Perez wasn’t quick enough to put together any consistent offense.
At one point, Gamboa was one of the most exciting fighters in the game, but not anymore. He has been fighting a lot of stinkers lately. His star has dimmed, but he is still a real force in the ring and could just be fighting down to the level of his opposition.
