Tony Bellew DEFEATS Nathan Cleverly – British Boxing News

british boxing scene headerIn a WBO cruiserweight eliminator and highly charged grudge match, Tony Bellew (22-2-1, 14 KOs) got his revenge against former world champion Nathan Cleverly (28-1, 14 KOs) taking a split decision on Saturday night at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. The first eight rounds were close, but Bellew was able to bully Cleverly into the ropes and deliver punishment for the last four rounds. Cleverly, who apparently suffered an injury to his right hand, was gassed at the end. Scores were 116-112, 115-113 Bellew, 115-114 Cleverly.

Unbeaten 2012 Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist Anthony Joshua (10-0, 10 KOs) blew away 39-year-old veteran Michael Sprott (42-23, 17 KOs) with a barrage of punches in round one on Saturday night at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. The bout was waved off after just 86 seconds.

WBC #1 super middleweight “Saint” George Groves (21-2, 16 KOs) overcame New Jersey’s Denis “Momma’s Boy” Douglin (17-4, 10 KOs) scoring a seventh round TKO. Groves dropped Douglin in round seven and got the stoppage moments later. Time was 2:54

IBF #1 super middleweight James DeGale (20-1, 14 KOs) scored an impressive third round TKO over WBC #10 Marco Antonio Periban (20-3-1, 13 KOs). DeGale dropped Perigean with a left hand and Periban was unable to continue. Time was :30. After the fight, DeGale called WBC champ Carl Froch a coward.

WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (30-0-2, 22 KOs) hammered out a twelve round unanimous decision over game Hidenori Otake (22-2-3, 9 KOs). Otake was hampered by a cut over the right eye in the late rounds. Scores were 119-109, 119-109, 118-110.

WBA bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell (24-2-1, 11 KOs) retained his title with a tenth round TKO over Javier Chacon (20-3, 5 KOs). It was a competitive fight until Chacon quit 39 into round ten citing an injured right shoulder.

WBC #8 super middleweight KO artist Callum Smith (15-0, 11 KOs) was forced to go the full twelve rounds, winning a yawn-inducing unanimous decision over WBC #11 Nikola Sjekloca (28-3, 8 KOs). Scores were 118-111, 120-108, 118-110.

2012 Olympian welterweight Bradley Saunders (11-0, 8 KOs) oupointed journeyman Ivans Levickis (13-15, 12 KOs) over six rounds. Score was 60-54.

WBO #6 super middleweight KO artist Vincent Feigenbutz (17-1, 16 KOs) scored a seventh round TKO over journeyman Olegs Fedotovs (18-18, 12 KOs).
