There is a strategic way to work one’s way to the top of the boxing world… There are a few different ways that one can go about it actually. Some paths are faster and some not as fast, although the ones who have the most promise coming out of the amateur system are usually on a faster track. A track which garners much more attention, much faster than the not so celebrated fighters from boxing’s AAA league.

Karl Dargan is an exception though. Not only did he have a very good amateur career, a career that saw him compete in and win several notable tournaments including winning Gold in the 2005 US championships and competing in the 2004 US Olympic trials (losing to Anthony Peterson twice) and nearly earning a spot on the 2007 Pan Am Games, losing due to injury.

Dargan is trained by his cousin Nazim Richardson, who also happens to be the trainer to many superstars in the sport, fighters who Karl soaked up a ton of knowledge from. Fighters like Bernard Hopkins and Shane Mosley were quick to give Karl answers to his questions and of course, Hopkins was willing to tell him much more than Dargan even asked.

When asked about a possible world championship shot, Richardson said he would like to see his nephew/fighter get to about 22–0 before he gets his chance.

On Friday night the top prospect will be stepping into the ring for the 18th time against a live under dog from north of the border as he will be taking on Tony Luis.

Luis is coming off an 8 round unanimous decision over Wanzell Ellison last July. The last time Luis was in the ring with a top prospect was, the fight prior, last January when he stepped into the ring with the then 15-0 Ivan Redkach, a fight that found Luis having to climb off the canvas in the first round and overcome a cut to his forehead in the sixth round from an accidental headbutt to drop a unanimous decision after 10 rounds, but it wasn’t a fight where Tony didn’t have his moments.

This will be a step up for Karl “The Dynamite” Dargan no doubt. It’ll give us a gauge on what path he’s on, and if he’s everything that his trainer/uncle Nazim, and what the people who follow the sport, and he himself thinks he is, he will be achieving the biggest win to date.
