RD vs JCCBy Jimmy Lange

I love this topic! One fight in the last 30 years that never got made, that should have been. Since this topic is dealing in fantasy, I will take the liberty to change the terms a tad. Let’s adjust our time line a bit and add the phrase for both fighters, to, “in their prime”… I know that in 1985, Duran was not in his prime, but he still had some left in the tank which he proved when he faced Iran Barkley four years later to his win his WBC Middleweight strap in an all out war.

Since the two fighters on my wish list do overlap in their careers, I am going with Julio Cesar Chavez Vs Roberto Duran. This is my dream match, so I will add, the site… Madison Square Garden! The all time Mecca of big time boxing. With the back drop of Panama’s greatest, son against arguably history’s greatest Hispanic fighter, in a very long line, add New York City, and this makes for the most electric atmosphere a fight fan could ask for.

The fight….

Classic, and no less!

The master boxer puncher and the master brawler. Two absolute savages – the likes of which this century craves, but is yet to find.

This would be a fight between two men who fight with a pure disdain, or hate if you will. Each man is not only fighting for his country, but fights through the hunger that remains and still drives them. As Duran is in my opinion, the more skilled of the two, Chavez would never waiver in his assault.

Steady pressure and imperiousness to Duran’s power would keep Chavez close behind, even, and ahead. Not to mention his devastating power and relentless body attack. Duran’s impeccable footwork, combinations from all angles, would keep the fight in doubt as well. The winner of this fight would be determined by a simple case of running out of time. After the 15th round (yes, since it’s my dream match, it must be 15 rounds as well), whichever of these warriors just happens to be ahead on the scorecards, will get the nod. If they fought, 100 times, in their prime, they may go, 50-50.
