Kevin Owens Stuns and Impresses WWE Universe in Win Over John Cena – WWE SHOCKER

Kevin OBy Nick “Red” Conley

During Elimination Chamber on May 31, NXT champion Kevin Owens wowed, stunned, and impressed the WWE Universe in his upset win over John Cena. While the match was simply considered the “battle of champions” because Owens held the NXT championship and Cena held the United States championship, and the match was not for any belts. It was really for bragging rights. When Owens called Cena out on Monday Night Raw a few weeks back and WWE Creative confirmed the two would battle at Elimination Chamber, I would argue few expected Owens to have a chance, especially given Cena has been the WWE’s poster child for so long. However, it certainly was a stunner when Owens pulled out the win, and then continued to pile on John Cena and the fans with trash talk.

The match itself was absolutely phenomenal, arguably the best match of the night. I for one am never a fan of John Cena matches, as they are often boring, predictable, and repetitive. The two certainly gave it their all and unloaded a variety of moves. For a bit of a porky fella, Owens is athletic, creative, and quick. He reminds me of Bray Wyatt a little bit in terms of his athleticism. Owens is also great on the microphone, pretty much solidifying his stardom, as he could support his wide array of wrestling moves with a loud, entertaining mouth. WWE Creative has done a spectacular job at elevating Owens, even before his match with John Cena. Given that Owens has now beaten John Cena, arguably the most consistent wrestler in the WWE right now, Owens appears unstoppable. WWE Creative has already capitalized on this rivalry by booking a rematch between the two in two weeks at the Money in the Bank paper view, a match the fans will certainly be eager to watch. However, it is hard to imagine the match having the same outcome. It is unlikely WWE will have John Cena lose twice in a row to an NXT superstar, even if he is the champion. The company has to protect the company, and John Cena is the star when it comes down to it.

WWE Creative I think did a wonderful job with this one. Bold yes, but still wonderful. They used Cena’s stardom to propel a new face. It worked and was believable in this case because Owens matched Cena step for step in the match. Now if Owens loses in the rematch, which I think is very likely, he has already proven himself in his debut in the WWE by beating Cena, and doing so in a believable manner. I for one am looking forward to the day that Owens is permanently introduced into the WWE, as he will certainly do great things.
