This Fourth of July weekend is a slow one for the boxing scene, as there are very few marquee match ups going on that will be televised. Perhaps the best fight of the weekend will once again be coming from the smaller weight classes. On Saturday night in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, (RSR #2) Pedro Guevara, 25-1-1, 17 KO’s, will be defending his WBC 108 pound world title against (RSR #14) Ganigan Lopez, 25-5, 16 KO’s in what is expected to be a high action affair.

Guevara, who is 26 years of age, will be making his second defense of his WBC title that he won defeating former champion and current contender Akira Yaegashi for the vacant crown. It has been nearly three years since Guevara has tasted defeat, and his one loss was to former champion and current contender John Riel Casimero. That loss was a split decision for the IBF world title. His lone draw was also a split draw, so it is safe to say that it can be argued, that if judges saw those two fights just a bit differently Guevara would still be sporting an unblemished ledger.

Ganigan Lopez is on even a longer winning streak than Guevara and at 33 years of age is on the verge if his first major title shot. Since losing to former champion and current contender Denver Cuello in May of 2012, Lopez has rattled off five wins in a row, including two over notable fighters such as Luis Ceja and Mario Rodriguez. In 2010 Lopez fought valiantly in a close split decision loss to former champion and current contender Adrian Hernandez, in what would have earned him a title shot had he got the nod. Now over five years later and in the twilight stage of his career Ganigan Lopez has finally received his shot at a world title.

In this fight, which nearly guarantees to provide some good action, the boxing pundits will most likely be favoring the younger and fresher Guevara. Guevara has a reach advantage of two and half inches and also holds the advantage in age, he is 26 and Lopez is 33. Lopez knowing this may be his last and only shot at glory is sure to come prepared to lay it all on the line, so anything can happen. That is why they fight the fights.

Unfortunately the fight will not be televised by any major American network, but if you are like this writer, you can wait for it to pop up on YouTube and check out what is sure to be an interesting fight that will provide its own Fourth of July fireworks.
