Fabricio Werdum – Cain Velasquez SET? – Breaking UFC News

Ariel Helwani broke the news on UFC Tonight that Fabricio Werdum will defend his heavyweight championship for the first time in an immediate rematch with Cain Velasquez.

Werdum took the belt at UFC 188 in Mexico City, submitting him in the third round to cap off a dominant performance.

The nature of the loss and the fact that Velasquez has only fought once in almost two years led many to believe the American/Mexican would take an easier fight, in order to get rid of any ring-rust, before going back for the belt. Additionally there were at one point a number of vying contenders such as Andrei Arlovski, Junior Dos Santos and Stipe Miocic.

But clearly Velasquez believes his performance in June was a one off. There was much talk post-fight that he was not adequately prepared for the bout having only spent two weeks in Mexico City, which is 7,000 feet above sea level, compared to the month that Werdum spent in the area.

Neither a date nor venue has been named.
