Debbie “D2” Edwards: The “Bad” Brad Berkwitt Show Producer, Football Feature Writer & Lots More

IMG_5234Exclusive Interview by Ian “The Boxing Historian” Murphy

“We are all different, much like a flower garden. Those differences, when combined, are beautiful.”—Debbie ‘D2” Edwards

It’s funny, sometimes your first impression of someone is totally at odds with the more lasting one. In the case of getting to know Debbie Edwards, I found my first impression to be spot on. Her warmth, humor, and good nature are apparent from the very start, but as you get to know her a little bit, there is significant depth and intelligence. She is a thinker and a doer, which makes Debbie an ideal partner in any project you would need to get done. She would make sure it is done professionally and efficiently. “Bad” Brad is very lucky to have her on the RSR team.

Deb wears many hats for RSR, as she is videographer for The “Bad” Brad Berkwitt Show, a live correspondent, and a columnist in her own right. This variety in her role on RSR is actually Debbie in microcosm. She wears many hats in life and fulfills these roles with patience, understanding and professionalism. In the following interview with “D2”, we get a look beneath the surface (and a pretty one at that!) and see a talented, passionate and driven woman who takes pride in her ability to be the “glue” of any operation, whether it be a family, business, or creative endeavor.

IM: Thanks a bunch for taking the time out to do this interview. First off, could you tell us a little about yourself, where you grew up?

I’m a country girl, I grew up in Vacherie, Louisiana, the third of six children. I’m a thinker. I am very reflective…and I enjoy learning and challenges.

IM: Do you have any children? If so, how old?

I have two children, but they aren’t “children” anymore. Kaitlyn, 24, is a nurse and Kellen, 19, is a linebacker at Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock, Arkansas.

IM: Do you have any specific details on your career/education?

I graduated from St. James High School in St. James, Louisiana. I went on to a career in refining, most recently working as a Shift Supervisor at a local refinery. So, long story short, I am responsible for the safe and efficient production of the fuels that transport us, warm us, and fuel to feed us.

IM: What drives Debbie Edwards? What makes you tick?

I am self-driven, and I can be very focused. I love to debate and hear others’ points of view. I have no problems coexisting with others who have a polar opposite viewpoint than I do as long as they are respectful and are not condescending, and that their views and actions don’t hurt or adversely affect others. I realized early on, the keys to my obtaining my goals were a positive outlook and hard work. I take pride in my accomplishments because they are the result of hard work, blood, sweat, and sometimes tears.

IM: What would you consider your best/worst character traits?

My best character trait is my patience. I am very patient and very diplomatic. However, that diplomacy can quickly fade when I feel attacked or disrespected. My worst personality trait is that I tend to procrastinate. I know this about myself, so, when presented with a task, I jump on it immediately. People think that I’m really efficient when the truth is… If I don’t do something right away, there is a great chance that I won’t do it at all!

IM: Do you have a favorite actor? Recording artist?

Hmmmm…. That’s a tough one. I am not a big movie buff, and don’t watch a lot of television outside of HGTV. So, I will default to times past and say that Elizabeth Taylor is my favorite actress. “Giant” is one of my favorite movies, and so is “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”. My favorite actor is probably Val Kilmer, since I love “Batman” too.

Recording artist…Another tough one for me because I love all types of music. In my CD player now, there is everyone from Linda Ronstadt to Pink. There is a Dixie Chicks CD pretty close, Maroon 5, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Aaron Neville, Katy Perry… I like Bruno Mars, Garth Brooks, Lyfe Jennings, Matchbox 20. My favorite is probably Adam Levine, particularly the “Songs about Jane” album that Maroon 5 put out a few years back. I just love that CD.

IM: Do you have any unique interests outside of sports?

YES!! I like cross stitching, dancing, reading, and I love Words With Friends.

IM: Any particular talents? Musical ability, etc? Ever competed in anything?

No particular talents. I love writing. Appreciate art. I am so NOT athletic. (Big Laugh) But I did some 4H competition in school.

IM: If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you say to them?

That’s a good one! Because I am such a people person and because I have such varied interests, it’s hard to narrow down to one particular person. I would love to have a conversation with Ann Rule. I love her ability to delve into the minds of killers. Fascinating.

I would love to meet Serena Williams. She, in my opinion, is the best tennis player of this era, and has a strong physical and mental edge over her competitors. I would love to ask her about a tennis match that she played a number of years ago against Kim Clijsters. Serena was down match point, and battled back from a huge deficit to win the match. I would love to know what feeds that mental edge that has made her so formidable.

IM: Could you tell us something that most people don’t know about you?

I briefly attended modeling school.

IM: If there was anything about this world you could change, what would it be?

I love variety. I am fascinated with the differences of the human race, but I would LOVE to see selfishness, intolerance, and hypocrisy disappear. We are all different, and much like a flower garden, those differences, when combined, are beautiful. What is ugly is the hate, prejudices, intolerance, and selfishness that is prevalent in our society.
