So I’m guessing you’re wondering how a delicate flower like me got interested in the crazy sport of WWE. It didn’t happen overnight or even over a decade, but one day, here I was—a true WWE fan. I was just as surprised as anyone else. I’ve always been a football fan and a NASCAR fanatic, but “fake” wrestling? Yep, it won me over. Let me tell you a little about my journey.

I’m a mom of 3 boys who were born in ’89, ‘93 and ’94. They started out like most little boys at that time—interested in Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and cartoons about Batman and Superman and various other super heroes. As they got a little older and became more interested in seeing who could inflict the most pain or endure the most pain, they naturally found interest in professional wrestling. I bought the wrestling figures and the wrestling rings and toy ladders and tables and steel steps and any other type of wrestling paraphernalia my boys could find. We started watching WWE matches with characters such as Goldberg, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, The Undertaker, Rey Mysterio, Maven, Kane, Goldust, Hulk Hogan and a cornucopia of others.

Who could forget the finishing moves of some of these characters? There was Rikishi with the Stinkface. If I had been his opponent, you can bet I would have run screaming from the ring before I’d let him get my cheeks between his!! And how about Mick Foley/Mankind? His Mandible Claw makes me gag even thinking about it. Don’t get me started on his Mr. Socko move—nothing that comes out of his pants needs to go in my mouth, thank you very much. Should I mention the Boogeyman and his love of eating worms? What the actual crap was that about? When I look back on it, it’s no wonder 3 little snot nosed boys would find this sport entertaining. But, watching them watching it actually made it a little fun.

Fast forward to today when those little boys are 26, 22 and 20. The youngest one never misses a Monday Night Raw or a Thursday night Smackdown or Hell in the Cell or Tables, Ladders and Chairs or Royal Rumble or Wrestlemania. Now we watch Roman Reigns, Ryback, Seth Rollins, John Cena, Dean Ambrose, New Day, Big Show, Mark Henry and let’s not forget the ladies—the Bella Twins, Paige, Charlotte, Naomi and Eva Marie. The matches are just as exciting and the characters are just as big. Let’s face it, some of those guys aren’t horrible to look at either. Except for Neville. He is definitely not what I’d call a looker. But I bet he gets a heck of a satellite reception with those ears.

Some people call professional wrestling fake. I prefer to call it scripted. No matter what anyone says, these guys/girls are athletes who train and work hard. They are actors, athletes and sometimes a**holes, but they are most certainly entertaining. On the down side, they’ve cost me a pretty penny in stitches and broken bones over the years with my knuckleheads, but on the up side, we’ve had a lot of fun watching them together. Now if you’ll excuse me, I missed the Night of Champions Sunday and I heard Roman Reigns was looking pretty hot. Thank God for the WWE Network and reruns!
