Sergey Kovalev Looking to Make Improvements in Rematch with Jean Pascal

If Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, 28-0-1 25 KO’s didn’t have a near perfect match in his first fight with Jean Pascal, 30-3-1 17 KO’s, it would take an extremely well trained eye to identify his flaws. However, Kovalev believes that the first fight was not up to par with the expectations of him and trainer John David Jackson. Kovalev states “I did a lot of mistakes in our last fight now I try to fix it. I try to be better. It’s a secret about my mistakes and just me and my trainer know about my mistakes.”

It was a well kept secret indeed as this is a different stance than Kovalev gave in the past. He use to explain that he does not prepare for his opponents, but rather trains to fight his own fight. It is interesting to speculate what Kovalev will change and how those adjustments will affect the outcome of the rematch. With Freddie Roach taken over the duty of manning Pascal’s corner, we may wind up seeing a completely different fight all together.

Trainer John David Jackson might have thrown Kovalev under the bus when asked about whether or not there is a game-plan in place. John David Jackson says “We put a game-plan together, but he swears up and down there’s no game-plan. We devise a strategy that works for him.” It does put slight damper on the mythical image that has been created by the media, but we might let this one slide!
