Gennady Golovkin Will Defend the WBA, IBF and IBO Middleweight Belts Versus Dominic Wade

GGG PicWBA, IBF and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is set to meet Dominic Wade in the ring on April 23 in what will be a tune up fight before he faces Canelo Alvarez later in the year. With boxing fans and insiders predicting a knockout by Golovkin in this fight, online boxing odds have Golovkin as a -10000 favorite.

Wade is currently 18-0, with 12 of those wins coming by knockout. Unfortunately, he is a relatively inexperienced fighter, who hasn’t faced anyone with the knockout power Golovkin has. Wade does have an advantage when it comes to age since he is 25 and Golovkin is 33, but his youth will not be able to save him against the most feared fighter in boxing right now.

In his last fight, Golovkin defeated David Lemieux by TKO in the 8th round. The fight, which was held at Madison Square Garden, helped Golovkin unify the middleweight titles.

Dominic Wade’s last fight was against Sam Soliman, and he managed to win the fight via a split decision. Soliman is a 42-year-old journeyman boxer and the fact that Wade needed a split decision to win the fight doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence.

According to Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler, tickets for the fight have been selling quickly and he expects them to sell out before the fight, which is a testament to Golovkin’s star power.

For fans wondering why Golovkin is fighting Wade instead of Canelo Alvarez, which the IBF declared had to happen this year. The answer is that Alvarez was given permission to fight an opponent before facing Golovkin so he would have enough time to safely gain weight.

Before accepting the fight, Alvarez tried to get Golovkin to fight him at a catch weight. The WBC declined and allowed both fighters to fight other opponents before facing each other.

The IBF decided that Golovkin had to fight Wade, while Alvarez decided to fight Amir Khan in May.

Alvarez is also an overwhelming favorite to defeat Khan when they fight each other, but Khan has a better resume than Wade, and is capable of causing problems for Alvarez.

When Golovkin and Alvarez eventually meet in the fall, it will be one of the biggest fights of the year. Alvarez, who has won four straight fights after losing to Floyd Mayweather in 2013, will be in for another tough fight because he hasn’t faced anyone with Golovkin’s punching power before. The fact that Golovkin has knocked out 21 straight opponents is also something to give him some concern.

32 of Canelo Alvarez’s 46 wins have come by knockout so he has some power of his own but Golovkin has never been knocked down in a fight and has a great chin, which will make it difficult for Alvarez to put him on his back.

The Alvarez vs. Golovkin fight will be one of the most entertaining fights of the year because both men like to trade punches with their opponents. A win by either man would allow them to claim the pound for pound title as the best boxer in the business, but both fighters need to defeat their next opponents before we can start talking about the super fight.
