Wait, what, a photog is writing? Yes, I am, and in this new column for Ringside Report, I named Canvas Talk, where I’ll give you the weekly run down of boxing talk from the world of social media. What are the fans saying, not just the true boxing purist but the casuals as well?
This past week as every boxing fan knows “Kazakh Thunder” Triple G entered the ring in Los Angeles, and Gennady did what he was supposed to. “GGG” came away with a big 2nd round knockout over the slightly outclassed Dominic Wade. I had the opportunity to take in the fight as fan this time, and I can tell you the reaction in the Forum from true “GGG” fans were the complete opposite from the reaction of the haters on Facebook and other social media outlets.

Now all joking aside coming into the fight Golovkin was something like a -10,000 on the books in Vegas. With that being said, everyone knew this, and Golovkin still managed to sellout the Forum in Inglewood. For those of you that have not experienced a “GGG” fight it’s quite the show. Boxing fans from young to old show up. Fans who want to see an all action and a true “Mexican Style” warrior come forward and take it to his opponent, they show up. I can tell you his fans have yet to leave disappointed. Gennady is slowly becoming a household name, not just in Southern California where he now resides, but Worldwide. Recently Gennady signed exclusive endorsement deals with the Jordan Brand, and Apple. This baby face killer is humble, stays out of the limelight, and is on a mission to unify every title in the middleweight division.

“But he fights tomato cans” and “he ducked Ward” “He’s yet to fight someone that punches back” These are all quotes I see floating around social media. But the absolute best thing I’ve seen was given to us by Michael Montero from “Montero on Boxing”. Montero gave a “word of the day” which was “Mandatory”. With one word Michael pretty much shut up everyone criticizing “GGG” for taking on Wade Saturday.

Hopefully boxing fans can understand what happened Saturday night was due a decision to elevate Dominic to the #1 contender. The IBF allowed him to fight Golovkin for his title. Was this the right move by the IBF? Of course not. Did “GGG” have any say on that organizations decision to force the fight, NO! “GGG” went out there Saturday night and did his job, entertained his fans and knocked out his 22nd straight opponent. I have no doubt in my mind Gennady would unify the titles with Canelo Alvarez in a fight that would clearly be Golovkin’s toughest opponent to date. A “Super Fight” a fight that all boxing fans want to see. Will the WBC force the “Mexican Superstar” Alvarez to fight Golovkin? According to Mauricio Sulaiman “If Canelo beats Khan and does not meet his obligation to face Golovkin, then the WBC will have no choice but to strip Canelo of his belt”. Hmmmm I guess we’ll all wait and see.

As a true boxing fan, and professional photographer, I see boxers coming up the ranks. I go to local shows, I know when a fighter is getting his record padded, and when those lopsided decisions are given to ensure a promotional company doesn’t lose their “next big thing”.

With Gennady he’s truly a top pound for pound boxer. He gives fans a show, and lets his performance in the ring do his talking. Gennady is doing no wrong, he takes on anyone willing to sign that dotted line, he’s humble, he dismantles his opponents by devastating knockout, and looks likes the cute boy next door. The sad truth is I can’t help but to think it’s his white face that causes the social media hate. Yes, I said it, but in a day and age of keyboard warriors, it’s easy for ignorant shit talkers to sit around and look for all the negative in athletes. Rarely do I see valid points made when the hate is flowing. If “GGG” was arrogant, smoking dope, and headlining TMZ I could understand the hate from boxing fans. So if you’re reading this and feel “GGG” should be doing something different, articulate your answer and let me know. As a true boxing fan I’d like to hear what it is Golovkin can change? What can K2 and “GGG” professionally do with his career to change your mind about the undefeated WBA, IBO, IBF and interim WBC champion?
