Canelo Alvarez – Gennady “GGG” Golovkin Fight Might Happen in 2017

CA vs GGGA lot of people have been wondering why Canelo Alvarez isn’t fighting Triple G this year. Boxing fans have known for a while now that Alvarez would fight Liam Smith for the WBO Middleweight title. However, a lot of sportsbetting boxing odds probably favored the Alvarez/Triple G bout over the matchup that Jerry Jones and Oscar De La Hoya announced.

There are no bigger names in boxing than Triple G and Alvarez at the moment. The fact that there are no plans in the near future to see them face off makes little sense. Alvarez keeps saying that he will fight anyone, so one wonders whether he is actually committed to his match against Liam Smith and actually intentionally shied away from Triple G.

When Canelo defeated Amir Khan in the spring, everyone was certain that he would turn his sights on Triple G, but he didn’t because boxing is boxing and everyone knows what to expect from the sport by now.

And according to De La Hoya, there was no chance of a Canelo/Alvarez fight happening this year. As a 154 pounder, Canelo falls comfortably within the junior middleweight arena.

Triple G, on the other hand, has spent his life fighting at 160. People talking about a cut weight were merely spreading rumors. And that makes sense because the media has been hyping a Canelo/Triple G fight for a very long time.

In fact, Triple G has been campaigning for an opportunity to take on Canelo like his life depended on it. For the moment, all that boxing fans can hope for is that the fight might happen next year if the time is right and Canelo makes the weight limit.

Of course, it is easy to see why disappointed boxing fans might shy away from the hope of a Canelo/Triple G fight in 2017. Then again, Canelo himself confirmed (as far as it is within his power to do so) that a fight with Triple G would definitely materialize next year.

And one has to recognize the amount of time it takes to organize such fights, all the negotiations involved. The fans want this fight and they want it quickly. Maybe that explains why Canelo is facing Liam Smith, to feed the hunger of boxing fans until the negotiations for a potential Canelo/Triple G fight achieve a positive outcome.

Of course, many fans will probably dismiss these excuses. No one really cares about Liam Smith, who, while undefeated as a boxer, is virtually unknown by boxing fans outside the United Kingdom.

De La Hoya accepts that there can be no pleasing certain fans, and some people will bash every fight that Canelo participates in until the bout with Triple G is finally delivered. The Liam Smith matchup is, unfortunately, not the best fight possible for Alvarez at this point in time, and the fans refuse to be placated.

Liam Smith is basically a nobody whose undefeated record can be imputed to the relatively unimpressive boxers have has encountered during this short career. While he has continued to defend the Liam Smith fight, De La Hoya has, none the less, promised to make the Triple G bout the mega event everyone expects.
