His moniker is “Ruthless”, a nickname that perfectly describes his fighting style; unrelenting, bloody and painful. Those qualities brought Robbie Lawler to the top of the welterweight heap, his post-fight pictures are a testament to the wars that he basks in and welcomes in open arms. Lawler though is not a fighter that just throws caution to the wind, he is mistakenly pegged into a character that fights with reckless abandon. He’s not that necessarily.

Lawler for the most part, is a measured and calculating fighter, he doesn’t dive in without preparation when he fights, he looks for angles, test his opponent’s tendencies and breaks their defense, but Lawler only becomes “Ruthless” when he gets hit by his opponents, which happens in his fights given the talent level of his division, from there he becomes Robbie Lawler to “Ruthless”.

Lawler churns out matchups that are fight of the year caliber, his two fights versus Rory MacDonald were close but Lawler comes out in the late rounds to score a knockdown and in the second fight, he scored a TKO. Another Lawler classic was his title defense against Carlos “the natural born killer” Condit, both fighters scored knockdowns against each other and it came down to the final round where both fighters gave it their all until the horn signaled the end of the fight, in which both fighters responded by resting their arms on top of octagon beam, exhausted. That’s the Robbie Lawler effect, the reason he is a fan favorite.

On July 30 in Atlanta, Georgia, Lawler is set to return and defend his welterweight title against Tyron Woodley, who has been campaigning for a title shot. Wish granted. This matchup is a toss up, yours truly is slightly leaning towards a Lawler win but in light of the recent spate of quick title exchanges, a Woodley upset is not unlikely. Woodley, like the champion, also produces enough power to send his foes to KTFO city, the question now is who will be able withstand either fighter’s power?

Now, the answer to that is worth watching.
