The Historian’s Hub: British Boxing, Tyson Fury Is Dope(ing) & The Return of Adonis “Chickenson” Stevenson

IanRSR1By Ian “The Boxing Historian” Murphy

To be found in an abbreviated installment of “The Historian’s Hub”:

The British Are Coming! 14 world champs from a country ⅓ the size of Texas. Tyson Fury Gets Busted for doping, remains, well, a dope. Boy do I feel like an ass supporting that guy for five minutes. We’re done, “Tyson”! Your name now reverts to being IRONic… The Quebecois who is increasingly being known as “Chickenson” defends his trampionship, wins by impressive KO and nobody cares…

The British Are Coming!

Currently there are fourteen British World Champions. This is especially impressive given that Great Britain is less than half the size of Texas, albeit with a higher population. With Belfast’s Carl Frampton winning a portion of the Featherweight title from Mexico’s Leo Santa Cruz recently, being most recent, the British are indeed coming! Belt-holders like Kell Brook, Terry Flanagan, Tony Bellew, James DeGale, Billy Joe Saunders, Liam Smith, Ricky Burns, Anthony Crolla, Lee Selby, Lee Haskins, and Jamie McDonnell are all from Great Britain. The recognized Heavyweight Champion, Tyson Fury, is British, as is IBF belt-holder Anthony Joshua. What are these men eating? In fairness, none but Fury are considered full Champion, although some of the above have the potential to unify, especially Joshua and Frampton.

Fury is Dope(ing)

Recognized Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury has recently come under scrutiny that he has abused performance enhancing drugs. He pissed hot for Nandrolone according to UKAD and despite this result, Fury continues to deny using it. Hey Tyson! DENIAL IS RIVER IN EGYPT, BOYO! Fess up, get your slap on the wrist and get back to fighting! It remains unclear if his upcoming fight with former Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko is still on or not. Stay tuned…

Adonis Stevenson

The man Sergey Kovalev refers to as “Chickenson” defended his WBC Light heavyweight belt against Thomas Williams, JR. recently and won by fourth round knockout. Listen, I get it that Williams was his mandatory defense and all, but who the hell is Thomas Williams, JR.? Stevenson did his usual jab, move, throw the big left. Williams came to fight, and landed some solid punches, but it wasn’t enough. Stevenson’s performance was enough to dispense with an overwhelmed Williams, but would he do that against Kovalev or Andre Ward? Ward would juke him out of his shoes and Kovalev likely knocks him out. Now we see if Stevenson fights another “top contender” before tangling with the winner of Kovalev/Ward. Maybe Ol’ Adonis has a few tricks up his sleeve and is hoping Ward defeats Kovalev. He then gets a big-money unification fight, as a fight with Ward would be more lucrative than one with Kovalev. Time will tell, but don’t hold your breath. Stevenson is nearly 70, and it might backfire if Ward loses…
