Scottish boxer “Iron” Mike Towell, 11-1, 8 KO’s, passed away Friday after suffering a fifth round TKO loss to Welshman Dale Evans, 12-3, 4 KO’s. Towell was just twenty-five years old. Towell was undefeated coming into this fight and has been building a name for himself fighting in his home county of Scotland. His fight against Evans was a final eliminator for the British Welterweight title. Towell was knocked down in the first round and again in the fifth round with a left hook.

He got up once again, but the fight was shortly stopped by referee Victor Loughlin. Loughlin also refereed the fight between Chris Eubank, JR. and Nick Blackwell on March 26, 2016 that resulted in Blackwell being put in a medically induced coma after being stopped in the tenth round and marked the end of his boxing career. After Towell was stopped in the fifth round, he collapsed in the ring and was carried out on a stretcher before being rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University hospital, where he passed away hours later. It was also revealed that he had to stop sparring in weeks leading up to the fight due to migraines, but it was blamed on stress because of the upcoming fight with Evans.

His girlfriend Chloe Ross took to Facebook Friday September 30th to explain the situation: “I’m absolutely heartbroken to say my annoying best friend passed away tonight at 11:02 very peacefully. Michael had severe bleeding and swelling to his brain. He had been complaining of headaches for the last few weeks but we put it down to migraines with the stress of his fight. It has been the longest 24 hours of our lives. My baby has lost his daddy. But he will be so so proud of his dad in what he achieved. Today once he was taken off of his life support, he fought right to the end and he’s done us all so proud and I’m so glad I got to spend 8 and half years with the absolute plonker and still have the best thing that ever happened to us.”

Dale Evans voiced his concern after the fight, saying via Twitter “all of my thoughts & prayers are with Mike, family & friends right now. Celebrations can be put on hold for tonight until we hear more”

Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, who promoted Towell, also tweeted his respects “absolutely devastated by the passing of mike Towell – all of our thoughts with his friends and family at this time”.
