Danny Garcia is one of the most polarizing figures in boxing. He is without a doubt a big time name throughout the sport. He garners enough attention to be looked at through a microscopic lens, there is a love and hate relationship often with no middle ground. One has to wonder if Garcia has the potential to be a future pay per view star?

Garcia, 32-0, 18 KO’s is mostly criticized for his bout against Rod Salka. Salka was his opponent prior to his clash against Lamont Peterson. Salka, although an abysmal choice for an opponent, is not the only notable fight on Garcia’s resume.

Garcia’s upcoming non title fight against Samuel Vargas reminds people of the Salka fight due to the low ranking Vargas has compared to Garcia who is the number 3 welterweight in the world according to Boxrec. The negative publicity that Garcia had from the Salka fight and will receive for this fight is comparable.

There is a large contingent of fans that hope Garcia loses every time that he steps into the ring. This is actually a key ingredient that can make him a pay per view star, especially if he defeats Keith Thurman. People watch with interest in hopes that certain fighters lose. Floyd “Money” Mayweather, JR. is the perfect example of this, many fans bought Floyd’s pay per view fights hoping that he would lose.

The WBC champion is often called a “cherry picker” by his skeptic fans. This alone is fuel for fans to dislike Garcia if they view him as someone who will not fight the best available opponents. Disliking a fighter is a key component for pay per view buys as those fans look at Garcia as a villain.

Another reason why some fans have loved to hate Garcia is because of his father, Angel Garcia. Angel has a loud mouth and is a very bold individual who has no problem saying exactly how he feels. Garcia is never heard trash talking, unlike his father who does the talking. Angel adds excitement into the mix. Angel easily can hype up a fight with his remarks as he is already doing that for the Thurman bout.

“After Sammy, we’re going to take care of business with Thurman. I promise you one thing. Danny will destroy Keith Thurman, because he’s never fought a guy like Danny Garcia. Danny fought a lot [of fighters] like Thurman. [Amir] Khan was a killer, man. I know the secret of his [Thurman] power. His hair.”

Garcia has worthy opponents on his resume such as Amir Khan, Lucas Matthysse, Zab Judah and Erik Morales who is a potential future hall of famer. These fights took place in the junior welterweight division. Garcia is now fighting at welterweight which is one of the sports glamour divisions.

If Garcia can defeat Thurman, he will be a well-respected welterweight and that victory can potentially launch him into real superstar status. Garcia has often been the underdog in most of his fights, when he defeated Matthysse most boxing experts believed that he would succumb to Matthysse’s relentless pressure. When he defeated Khan, most thought he would be doomed by the speedy fighter.

There is a legion of fans who admire what Garcia has done as he has come up the hard way and won fights in which he was written off. Those viewers most definitely would support Garcia, if he ever became a pay per view star. Danny has enough love and hate from the fans to make him a pay per view star.
