Carl Frampton and Leo Santa Cruz fought to an electric 12 round decision at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York this past July. Frampton picked up a majority decision victory in his first fight at the featherweight division. The fight was a thriller with back and forth action. It was one of the few bright spots of the 2016 boxing year, it could easily be a front runner for fighter of the year on many people’s ballot. Frampton, 23-0, 14 KO’s is coming off a stellar 2016. Prior to defeating Santa Cruz, he was able to unify titles in the IBF and WBA world titles in the super bantamweight division against Scott Quigg.

Santa Cruz, 32-1-1, 18 KO’s has been adamant about getting an immediate rematch. Santa Cruz is contractually obligated to a rematch and luckily for him that may come to the light in early 2017.

Earlier today, Frampton, took to social media with a tweet. “Done Deal! The rematch vs @leosantacruz is on!!! More news to come soon #AndStill”

According to Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times, “Santa Cruz will have the opportunity to avenge his only loss, to Northern Ireland’s new featherweight champion Carl Frampton, Jan. 28, Frampton’s manager Barry McGuigan first reported Thursday, with others later confirming the news.

The first fight was electric and there is no reason to doubt fireworks once again when those two meet in the ring. Santa Cruz and Frampton have had tremendous momentum in their last few fights, why not keep that momentum going?
