Jermall Charlo Vs Julian Williams & Abner Mares Vs Jesus Cuellar Coming December 10th

CharloBy James “The Truth” Doell

The long-awaited matchup between IBF super welterweight champion Jermall Charlo, 24-0, 18 KO’s, and mandatory challenger Julian Williams, 22-0-1, 14 KO’s, finally has a date and venue. The fight is scheduled to take place December 10th, from USC’s Galen Center in Los Angeles, California. This fight will co headline another world championship fight; as former three weight world champion Abner Mares, 29-2-1, 15 KO’s, takes on tough Argentine Jesus Cuellar, 28-1, 21 KO’s, for his WBA world featherweight title.

This event also marks the return of former CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Richard Schaefer. He resigned from Golden Boy in June of 2014, and has been absent from the boxing world since, due to a non-compete clause he signed with Golden Boy. Now Schaefer has returned to the sport, and has founded his own promotional outfit; Ringstar Sports. This will be the first card he has promoted under the new banner, and will be co promoted with TGB Promotions.

The IBF first ordered Charlo Vs Williams on May 30th, and it was slated to take place in October, but Charlo applied for a medical exemption to get LASIK eye surgery, and was granted a sixty-day exemption. He then took to twitter to say “#CharloWillams is worth M’s” which led many boxing fans to believe money was an issue holding back the fight.

Jermall Charlo first won his IBF title on September 12th of 2015, when he stopped Cornelius Bundrage, 34-6, 19 KO’s, in the third round, as expected. Just two months later, he made the first defense of his title against “Silky” Wilky Campfort, 21-3, 12 KO’s. He scored three knockdowns en route to a fourth-round stoppage over his very much outclassed opponent. In his most recent fight, he defended his title for the second time as he scored a unanimous decision over former champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout, 30-3, 17 KO’s. Charlo was heavily favored leading into this match up, but trout is no easy opponent, and gave Charlo his toughest test to date. The judges ultimately scored the bout 115-113, and 116-112 (2x) in favor of Charlo.

Julian “Jroc” Williams won the WBC Continental Americas super welterweight title in December of 2014 with an eighth-round stoppage over Jamar Freeman, 14-5-2, 7 KO’s. He defended that title twice in 2015. He stopped Arman Ovsepyan, 14-6, 11 KO’s, in the sixth round, and proceeded to stop Argentine Luciano Leonel Cuello, 35-4, 17 KO’s, in the very first round just three months later. In his first fight of this year, he took on number six ranked IBF contender Marcello Matano, 16-2, 5 KO’s, and stopped him in the seventh round. This fight secured him a mandatory spot to challenge the winner of Charlo vs Trout for the IBF world title.

Abner Mares Vs Jesus Cuellar was also slated to happen earlier this year, but was cancelled and postponed, until now. The fight was first slated to take place on June 25th, and was supposed to be the co main event to Keith Thurman vs Shawn Porter. Unfortunately, the bout was cancelled after Mares pulled out due to an undisclosed medical condition.

Abner Mares has held world titles at bantamweight, super bantamweight, and featherweight. He also went undefeated in his first twenty-seven fights, before losing his WBC world featherweight title to Johnny Gonzalez, 62-10, 52 KO’s, after being knocked out in the first round. He bounced back from his first career loss by winning his next three fights against Jonathan Oquendo, Jose Ramirez, and Arturo Santos Reyes, which set him up for a world title challenge against then WBA “super” world featherweight titlist Leo Santa Cruz, 32-1-1, 18 KO’s. Mares lost a majority decision in a fight of the year candidate which saw both fighters combine to throw over two thousand punches.

Jesus Ceullar won the interim WBA world featherweight title back in August of 2013, by winning a unanimous decision over Claudio Marrero, 21-1, 15 KO’s. He defended this title three times the following year, including a second-round knockout over Juan Manuel Lopez, 34-5, 31 KO’s. In June of 2015, he finally got his chance to win the full version of his title against Vic Darchinyan, 42-9-1, 31 KO’s. He stopped the former champion in the eighth round. In his most recent fight, he made the first defense of his WBA world featherweight title by scoring a unanimous decision victory over Jonathan Oquendo, 26-5, 16 KO’s, with the judges scoring the bout 116-112 (2x) and 120-107 in favor of Ceullar. His fight against Mares will be the second defense of his title.

The event will be a Premier Boxing Champions card and will be televised on Showtime.
