Did You Know? Today in Boxing History

Did You KnowBy Carlos “The Boxing Man” Ortenblad

Today is the 5-year anniversary of a fight between Hernán Márquez and Luis Concepción. Both weighed in at 112 pounds. Márquez (whose boxing alias is Tyson) fought like a much smaller version of Mike Tyson, and floored Concepción (whose boxing alias is “El Nica” and who will fight to defend his title as WBA World Super Flyweight Champion on Saturday, December 10, 2016 against the undefeated Khalid Yafai) three times in the first round, winning by a TKO in round 1 after a mere 109 seconds, even fasterthan Joe Louis´ 1938 win over Max Schmeling, which took 124 seconds. With the win, Márquez successfully defended the title of WBA World Flyweight Champion.

If it had not been cancelled, today we would have had the rematch between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko.

Long Live Boxing!
