At one point in their careers Victor Ortiz and Brandon Rios were promising prospects with a bright future, needless to say things change quickly in boxing.

Rios, 33-3-1, 24 KO’s is best known for his trilogy against Mike Alvarado, most notably the first two bouts. Rios was a relentless brawler who always brought the pain inside of the squared circle. He gained a rabid fan base who fell in love with his smothering style.

His best moment inside of the ring may have been meeting Manny Pacquiao on a PPV event broadcasted by HBO. Rios was easily defeated and never had a chance against the much quicker Pacquiao, however he did earn a career high pay day for his troubles.

Rios was last seen in the ring being blasted by Timothy Bradley. He was dissected like a frog in a biology class. Bradley was too much for Rios that night and ended up scoring a ninth round TKO stoppage.

Ortiz, 31-6-2, 24 KO’s was seen as a young lion in his days coming up. He had power in both hands and possessed speed. His finest moment as a professional came when he secured a fight with Floyd Mayweather, JR. on an HBO PPV. It was the biggest pay day Ortiz had ever seen. The fight ended up being infamous due to Mayweather, JR.’s “sucker punch” KO victory.

Ortiz is also known for being a “quitter” as he has ended up not going the distance in several instances. The first time this occurred was against Marcos Maidana, Ortiz lost by TKO in the sixth round. Josesito Lopez who was a big underdog broke Ortiz’s jaw, which ended up being a short night. Most recently Ortiz was stopped against Andre Berto in the rematch of their exciting thriller from 2011.

Ortiz recently took to social media on Instagram to address Rios when he insisted that both men get ready to do battle while training.

“The time is now, the fans want it. They’ve been asking for it (the fight) for years. Brandon Rios bring it baby. Let’s get them contracts going, Al Haymon lets make it happen”, said Ortiz.

The truth is that Ortiz and Rios have seen better days with both men being out of their primes and are now diminished. Another truth remains that this fight must happen, it has been brewing for years and will still make for a good action fight.

The bout may no longer be a main event caliber affair, but it can still be a worthy undercard fight, hell it can even be a good co- feature for a worthy main event. Two name fighters who are no longer at the top of their game is still better than two unknown fighters. We know what Ortiz and Rios will bring for however long it may last. So, boxing promoters out there, make it happen for the fight fans!
