Saturday night at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada the WBO World Welterweight Champion, Jessie “New Generation” Vargas, 27-2, 10 KO’s put his title on the line against the former 8 division world champion and future hall of famer, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, 59-6-2, 38 KO’s. Pacquiao who announced his retirement in April after defeating Timothy Bradley to focus on his political career as a senator looked to walk out of the arena as the new champion. From round one the speed of Pacquiao was clearly showcased as he was the faster man hitting Vargas with shots as he bounced in and out of the danger zone. In the second the power of Pacquiao began to show as Manny slipped a solid left jab to the chin of Vargas flooring him early in the round. Round 3 and 4 were all Manny as his ring generalship and overall ring experience defined those rounds as Pacquiao battered Vargas. In the middle rounds Vargas began to find his range and land hard shots on Pacquiao as both fighters went back and forth with big exchanges. The 8th round had a clash of heads that may had opened up a cut on the right eyebrow of Vargas but the United States Athletic Commission ruled the cut was caused by a Pacquiao punch.

Through 10 rounds of action Pacquiao had landed more than 100 punches more than Vargas had landed, and Pacquiao continued to beat Vargas to the punch throughout the championship rounds. After 12 Championship rounds the three judges scored it 114-113 and 118-109 (Twice) for the new WBO World Welterweight Champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. Pacquiao stated after the fight “I felt good, yes I felt like I could do more but now I’m going home to work with the senate and leaving my next opponent up to Bob, I’m not choosing my opponent, whoever my promoter gives me I’ll fight, I’ll fight anyone.” Vargas stated “ It was a chess match, we were on our toes, it was an entertaining fight, Manny has tremendous speed and experience, our team will come back stronger, I Promise, I hope everyone enjoyed the fight and I apologize if I let my fans down, it was a good learning experience and this fight elevated my game.”

In co-main event WBO World Featherweight Champion, undefeated Oscar Valdez, 21-0, 19 KO’s from Nogales, Sonora, Mexico made his first title defense against mandatory challenger Hiroshige Osawa, 30-4-4, 19 KO’s. Valdez looked sharp early as he landed at will on the out classed Japanese fighter Osawa. In the 4th round Valdez caught Osawa with a devastating left hook flooring Osawa. Valdez took his foot off the gas but still continued to land at will and hurt Osawa to the body. In the 7th round Valdez chopped Osawa down, catching Osawa with a huge sweeping left hook and landed a dozen unanswered punches on the face of the Japanese fighter forcing the referee Vic Drakulich to step in and call a halt to bout at the 1:50 mark of the round. Valdez stated after the fight “I know it was a good win but I have a lot to lean I am going to get better, I’m happy to give Mexico another great win with my title defense.”

In my pick for fight of the night and the second of four world championship fights being put on by Top Rank Promotions, former four division world champion and current WBO Super Bantamweight Champion, Nonito Donaire, 37-3, 24 KO’s looked to defend his title against undefeated southpaw prospect, Jessie Magdelano, 23-0, 17 KO’s. The first round of this much anticipated championship fight was feeling out round by both fighters as Magdelano sat back looking to counter Donaire. In round two and three Donaire used his experience to out box the younger Magdelano, as his quick combinations and precise punches landed at will on Magdelano. The fourth round seen a clash of heads that opened up gash over the left eye of Magdelano who showed a sense of urgency for the rest of the round once the blood began to flow.

In the 6th round Magdelano caught Donaire with a hard right hook hurting Donaire, Magdelano continued to hit Donaire with heavy shot for the rest of round. The middle rounds seen Magdelano find his rhythm and land clean body shots and great counters as Donaire really began to slow down allowing Magdelano to cease control of middle rounds. The 9th round had Magdelano catching Donaire with a hard counter right hurting Donaire. Donaire survived the round and the championship rounds had Donaire seemingly doing what he needed in the ring to pull off the fight. But the judges seen a different fight as after 12 solid rounds of boxing the judges had it 116-112 twice and 118-110 for the new WBO Super Bantamweight Champion Jesse Magdelano.

Shiming who had the eyes of 100 million Chinese on him Saturday night came out firing on all cylinders hitting Phaprom with vicious combinations and hard body shots early and often. In the second Shiming caught Phaprom with a solid left to the chin, Phaprom lost balanced catching himself on the canvas. Once Phaprom’s gloves touched the canvas referee Russell Mora began the count. The middle rounds brought much of the same as Shiming had his way with Phaprom landing punches at will. The 8th round had Shiming landing an accumulation of punches on the face Phaprom opening up a big gash over his left eye, Phaprom survived the round but continued to take a beating throughout the rest of the fight after 12 championship rounds the scorecards read 120-107 (Twice) and 119-108 for the fighting pride of China, Zou Shiming who moves to 9-1, 2 KO’s and heads home as the new WBO World Flyweight Champion.
