Andre Ward – Sergey Kovalev Set the Boxing STANDARD For the Best Fighting the Best in 2017!

2017By Joshua “JDB” Brewer

As we fall back and tidy up for the holiday season, take a moment to reflect on the November to remember. We quietly had the opportunity to see the two best light heavyweights in the world collide. While the fight itself had its moments, there were still many questions left unanswered. Andre Ward was successfully able to stifle the menace that was “Krusher” Sergey Kovalev. For many of the hardcore boxing fans it panned out in the way we appropriately expected. A lot of faints, a few spurts of action here and there but ultimately, a controversial ending. While many will say that boxing did itself no favors with the performances not quite living up to the billing, I digress.

This was a step forward, and a major step at that. One of many steps forward for the sweet science as we’ve escaped the cold war of promoters. Not only did we get to witness the two best light heavyweights, fast forward a week and we had the opportunity to see arguably the most brilliant lightweight of all time in Vasyl Lomachenko as he dispatched of the formidable Nicholas Walters.

We ask that the best fight the best, well, let this be a sign of the times. While some would argue that the year 2016 has been one of the worst years for boxing, one could counter. Whether it’s Shawn Porter Vs Keith Thurman, Isaac Chilemba Vs Oleksandr Gvozdyk or Leo Santa Cruz Vs Carl Frampton, 2016 has showed us that the times are changing. We’ve got a ton of talent lined up for 2017 and it’s already starting to get some people’s blood boiling. Keith Thurman Vs Danny Garcia and Tony Bellew Vs David Haye across the pond to name just two.

Let it sink in as this is only the beginning. Beginning of a journey to a new golden age of boxing. For those fans that intend to ride the rails as we churn forward, be amazed. There are several combinations of fights that can and will be put together over the next few years and these fights will elevate boxing to new heights. As with any sport, supply and demand are the basis for interaction. The consumers, you, the fan, are the forces that move the needle. The demand is the reason that you may see someone drenched in sweat at 4:00AM. The drive, the walk, the storm or whatever barrier that impedes the path to success starts from zero.

As these fighters put their lives on the line supplying the demand, we too as fans must recognize that the journey was not easy. Collectively, we can all gather round the fire and bask in the ambiance of a sport with a storied tradition that excelled well before we got here, and will continue to flourish long after we are gone. We will all understand in the end that we are friends.
