Tim Sylvia: Former UFC Champ Destroyed in 32 Seconds!

By Sean Farrell

Former two time UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia has made his reign atop MMA’s elite in the UFC seem like nothing more than a farce. After starting his MMA career 16-0, Sylvia ran into a slew of issues after claiming his first UFC title. Sylvia’s first UFC title defense was against Gan Mcgee.

Although successful, Sylvia failed his post fight drug test for the banned substance Stanozolol. Sylvia voluntarily forfeited the UFC title and was given a six-month suspension and fined $10,000 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Sylvia made a statement saying that the steroid usage was for shedding excess weight. Sylvia apologized but didn’t make a effort to claim innocence. After the incident over the steroids and his suspension, Sylvia was granted a shot at the UFC title by Frank Mir. Mir won via stoppage after snapping Sylvia’s forearm with an armbar. Sylvia then had a title match with UFC champion Andrei Arlovski in a bout in which the giant sized Sylvia was submitted again via Achilles lock.

Sylvia reclaimed the title from Arlovski defeating him in a grudge match to win the title and winning the rubber match to settle the score Tim Sylvia was UFC king again. Sylvia after two successful title defenses went on to be stopped by Randy Couture losing his title and was never the same again.

In 2008, Sylvia requested and was granted his release from his UFC contract, which he had one fight remaining on. Sylvia cited unhappiness with pay, desire to face Fedor Emelianenko, the non-exclusive contracts of other organizations, and the opportunity to fight more often as his reasons for leaving.

Sylvia went on to face Fedor Emelianenko only to be submitted in 36 seconds by rear naked choke. His next bout was against former boxer turned MMA fighter Ray Mercer, a bout in which Mercer knocked out Sylvia in 9 seconds. Sylvia has since went on to lesser organizations and managed to win four fights in a row bringing us to last night (1/28/10) at Titan FC 16.

Sylvia who was looking to be regaining some focus took on Abe Wagner a journeyman heavyweight prospect still trying to make a name for himself. Wagner may have done so amongst MMA fans Slyvia was finished by Wagner in 32 seconds. Sylvia was once considered one of the top four heavyweights in the world now he may just be cannon fodder for up and comers to knockout.
