Although the American Bully and Pit Bull Terrier share some of the same blood they are 2 different types of breeds. The American Bully has its foundation stemming from Pit Bull bloodline although, it is a cross breed of various other dogs. One thing that sets the Bully apart is it’s temperament as well some of its characteristic traits. Two main factors are the Bullies’ structure and temperament. According to “The American Bully Kennel Club”, or A.B.K.C. for short the breed was founded in the United States in the 20th century, the American Bully was produced using a foundation of American Staffordshire Terriers and American Pit Bull Terriers bred to several bulldog-type breeds. It was created with the sole purpose of being a family companion dog.

Although many individuals follow the common misconception that Pitbull Terriers and American Bullies are the same breed they are very different. For instance, the Pitbull Terrier was bred in the 1800’s as a competitive breed specific for aggressive purposes. At one time the fighter sport of Pit Bulls was a legal sport. As time went on this sport became illegal and went underground. Fast forward in time Pit Bulls have become a popular pet dog in many homes. Especially in the urban community, but with its aggressive breeding blood line the formation of many laws banning the breed were created. The B.S.L.stands for “Breed-Specific Legislation” — laws and regulations, enacted at the city or county level, that ban or restrict the keeping of dogs by breed, typically targeting Pit Bulls.

Making no distinction between the two when in fact the American Bully has been genetically digressed in its aggressive nature. In the Pit Bull underground fighting world an American Bully is not an ideal breed to fight. Due to their weight, built, and temperament. Is this a means to disregard a true game dog (Pit Bull Terrier) as a pet? No, but this is reiterating the 2 major factors that set these breeds apart. The American Bully Kennel Club is the official registry worldwide for the American Bully Breed. A breed that gained world-wide recognition and was established in 2004, due to the establishment of the A.B.K.C.

The American Bully breed has been selectively bred to give America’s breed a new start and build. Breeding with the American Staffordshire Terrier has given it all the positive characteristics of the breed’s genetics. Such as loyalty, human socialization, and other physical traits. The dog’s aggressive and gameness were bred out of the breed because the breed had no future and purpose for those traits. With this in mind, the breed is even different from the American Staffordshire Terrier in its overall physical appearance. The American Bully breed is in fact built with a more dense bone structure and “Bullied” build. Pit Bulls on the other hand were created by crossing Bulldogs into the genetic blend to produce a dog that possessed gameness and agility of the Terrier with the strength of the Bulldog. The Pit Bull’s origin stems from the United Kingdom where these dogs were used in blood sports such as, bull-baiting and bear-baiting.

The United Kennel Club was the first registry to recognize the American Pit Bull Terrier. UKC founder C. Z. Bennett assigned UKC registration number 1 to his own APBT, Bennett’s Ring, in 1898. Clearly we can see the distinction between these two beautiful, protective, as well as astonishing animals. The only question left to ask is; which would you rather have as a pet? Me I’m more of a Bully guy and love the culture well as community that the ABKC has built around the American Bully Breed. Though in my younger years I was a Pit Bull fanatic.
