Dillian Whyte – A Hero, A Villian and A Work In Progress

Back in 2015, the majority of British Boxing fans saw Dillian Whyte as the typical pantomime villain.

He was the man that beat our Olympic hero – Anthony Joshua – as an amateur in their early days and he was coming back to try and stop Joshua’s momentum as a professional.

The majority of the nation was backing Joshua and dismissed the Brixton man, but in that fight Whyte proved that he wasn’t there simply for a pay-day, but he was there to try and make a statement and a name for himself.

3 years on from that famous night at the O2 arena and Dillian Whyte has gone from a villain to a hero in the hearts and minds of many British Boxing fans.

He has since racked up 8 wins and has beaten two former World Champions in the process, whilst also earning a split decision victory against British veteran – Dereck Chisora – in a fight of the year candidate.

Throughout these fights and the build up to them, we have been on a journey with Whyte. Seeing him evolve, grow, learn and progress. Turning from Villain to Hero and now to a serious contender.

With all of that being said, Whyte still has a few things to get sorted before he fights for World honors, or it’s very likely that he will fall just short of that most prestigious accolade.

Whyte has some fundamental technique issues that need correcting, particularly his balance, and – in my personal opinion – he would really benefit from more skill specific training and cardiovascular conditioning to help him through the later rounds (As opposed to all of the power lifting style work we see him do a lot on social media.)

Against Parker, Whyte scared us all in the last few rounds, looking to be out on his feet and absolutely gassed out!

Had Parker not been such a nice guy throughout the fight, he probably could’ve taken advantage of this and got Whyte out of there…

I think that I stand united with the majority of British boxing fans, in the hope that Dillian Whyte can win a World title in the near future and at some point get a rematch with Anthony Joshua.

Whyte is without doubt still a work in progress, with only very little amateur experience and a few kickboxing fights as a young man.

However, he certainly has the drive, heart and dedication to succeed and win a World title; so there’s no reason why he can’t hone his skills and really go for it, especially with the backing of Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Promotions!

For his fight against Parker, Dillian Whyte is said to have earned a 7 figure sum. If that’s the case, then he’s a real rags to riches story…

The young boy from Jamaica, father at 13 and shot and stabbed on multiple occasions turns his life around and becomes a millionaire/World Heavyweight Contender.

Pretty amazing.
