He was 92.<\/p>\n<p>He started out as an art director at Esquire magazine where he met David Newman. Together they wrote the screenplay for the 1967 movie \u201cBonnie and Clyde\u201d which earned them both an Oscar nomination. Other scripts they wrote were \u201cThere Was a Crooked Man\u201d, \u201cWhat\u2019s Up, Doc?\u201d and \u201cSuperman\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In 1979 Benton directed \u201cKramer vs. Kramer\u201d with Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep. It received eight Oscar nominations <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>and won in five categories: Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for him, Best Picture for Stanley Jaffe, Best Supporting Actress for Meryl Streep and Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman.<\/p>\n<p>Five years later he directed Sally Field in \u201cPlaces in the Heart\u201d which received seven Oscar nominations and won for Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay: Benton\u2019s third Oscar!<\/p>\n<p>Other movies he directed were: \u201cBilly Bathgate\u201d, \u201cNobody\u2019s Fool\u201d, \u201cThe Human Stain\u201d, \u201cThe Ice Harvest\u201d, and his final movie \u201cFeast of Love\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Douglas Benton was born on 29 September, 1932 in Waxahachie, Texas.<br \/>\nHe is survived by his son John.<\/p>\n<p>Ringside Report sends our condolences tot he Benton Family in their time of grief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;
