He was 71.<\/p>\n<p>He was known for his portrayal as corrupt State Sen. R. Clayton \u201cClay\u201d Davis on all five seasons of \u201cThe Wire\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also had a recurring role as secretary of Defense Gen. George Maddox on \u201cVeep\u201d. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Whitlock had a long relationship with Spike Lee and appeared in six of his movies: \u201c25th Hour\u201d, \u201cShe Hate Me\u201d, \u201cRed Hook Summer\u201d, \u201cChi Raq\u201d, \u201cBlacKkKlansman\u201d and \u201cDa 5 Bloods\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It was in \u201c25th Hour\u201d that he first introduced what would become his signature phrase, \u2018Sheeeeeit,\u201d his own interpretation of the word \u201cshit\u201d which he used in \u201cThe Wire\u201d when possible.<\/p>\n<p>His last TV role was as the Chief of Police opposite Uzo Aduba on Netflix\u2019s White House murder mystery \u201cThe Residence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ringside Report sends their condolences to The Whitlock Family in their time of grief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;
