A fighter that takes the fights put in front of him and always comes into the ring in shape, ready to fight. A similarity to one of the legendary fighters who came before him in the middleweight division named Marvelous Marvin Hagler. You always knew there wasn’t going to be any BS once the bell rang and the same is applicable to Quillin.

Quillin recently vacated his WBO Middleweight strap for his family which in our interview, you will hear it loud and clear, means everything to him.

BB: First off, congratulations on the arrival of a new baby boy. How are Mom and he doing? Are you teaching him how to box yet?

Mom and baby are doing very, very well. Baby Chocolate” already has his hands up. Boxing is in his blood.

BB: Recently you vacated your WBO Middleweight Title. What made you do that?

There were a lot of reasons, family being number one! I didn’t want to go right into camp to get ready for the November 1st date they had. I sat down with my team and we made the best decision for my career. The belt goes, but the undefeated record stays.

BB: Now that you have vacated your belt, what is in store for your boxing career?

Tons of things. More great fights, hard training, and reading some movie scripts I’ve been sent.

BB: Do you consider yourself a boxer or a puncher? Or a combo of both?

I’m both, so boxer-puncher.

BB: To date, who do you feel was your toughest opponent and why?

All 31 of my pro fights have been tough. The toughest was the first time I went four rounds against Tomas Padron on April 20, 2006 in NYC.

BB: Your division has always been the most famous next to the heavyweight division over the years in boxing. How would “Kid Chocolate” do against Marvelous Marvin Hagler in his prime?

That’s a tough question for me to answer. I just watched his fight against Tommy Hearns and they fought one of the best rounds in middleweight division history. I always put my best foot forward to do my best and become a great fighter and world champion with a great record. But I can’t disrespect Hagler by saying anything other than fighters back then fought different than we do today.

BB: In this your almost tenth year in boxing, what was the biggest surprise on a business level in your boxing career?

My whole story as a professional fighter: signing with Golden Boy and Al Haymon and winning the world championship belt. There has been a lot of substance, trial and error, pain and glory to make me a better fighter.

BB: Being a Native New Yorker myself, I know how much the fans love boxing and support their fighters. How much have you seen that in your career thus far?

Lots. People are always acknowledging me or just wishing me the best. I get a lot of love walking through the borough of Brooklyn. Showing and receiving love is the best gift.

BB: If you could meet anyone from any period in time, who would that be and what would your first question be to them?

Bruce Lee. I’d ask him what his formula for success.

BB: Do you favor a mandatory retirement fund for all boxers and if so, how do you think it can finally be accomplished?

Yes. We need better commissions and for people in boxing to give the best information to fighters. It’s sad to see so many fighters who put everything into it for the fans to retire broke. I see so many great fighters like that today and I refuse to let that happen to me.

BB: Finally, what is the saying you live your life by?

Boxing, family and then myself.

(Interviewers Note: I would like to thank Bob Trieger of Full Court PRESS for coordinating this interview)

Follow Peter on Twitter

Peter Quillin
Division: Middleweight
Professional Record: 31-0, 22 KO’s

Date Opponent W-L-D Location Result

2014-04-19 Lukas Konecny 50-4-0 Washington, US W UD 12
WBO World Middleweight Title

2013-10-26 Gabriel Rosado 21-6-0 Atlantic City, US W TKO 10
WBO World Middleweight Title
2013-04-27 Fernando Guerrero 25-1-0 Brooklyn, US W TKO 7
WBO World Middleweight Title

2012-10-20 Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam 27-0-0 Brooklyn, US W UD 12
WBO World Middleweight Title
2012-06-02 Ronald Wright 51-5-1 Carson, US W UD 10

2011-11-05 Craig McEwan 19-1-0 Cancun, MX W TKO 6
2011-07-23 Jason LeHoullier 21-5-1 Las Vegas, US W TKO 5
2011-04-29 Jesse Brinkley 35-6-0 Reno, US W TKO 3
vacant United States Boxing Organisation Super Middleweight Title
2011-02-11 Dennis Sharpe 17-5-3 Fairfield, US W TKO 4

2010-12-18 Martin Desjardins 7-18-4 Quebec City, CA W KO 1
2010-02-06 Fernando Zuniga 28-9-0 Newark, US W UD 10

2008-09-17 Sam Hill 17-8-1 Manchester, US W TKO 10
2008-06-11 Dionisio Miranda 18-2-2 New York, US W UD 10
2008-04-16 Antwun Echols 31-7-4 New York, US W UD 10
2008-02-23 Thomas Brown 12-3-1 New York, US W KO 2

2007-12-13 Troy Lowry 27-7-0 New York, US W TKO 2
2007-09-05 Jesse Orta 7-10-1 New York, US W UD 6
2007-08-18 Jose Humberto Corral 10-5-0 Sandy, US W KO 1
2007-06-09 Jamaal Davis 7-1-0 New York, US W UD 8
2007-05-18 Victor Paz 9-3-1 New York, US W TKO 2
2007-04-26 Alexander Pacheco Quiroz 13-4-1 New York, US W TKO 1
2007-03-10 Nathan Martin 8-6-0 New York, US W TKO 2
2007-02-22 Steve Walker 20-14-0 New York, US W TKO 1

2006-11-03 David Estrada 10-9-0 New York, US W TKO 1
2006-09-20 Brad Austin 8-1-0 New York, US W TKO 2
2006-07-26 William Prieto 2-0-0 New York, US W KO 1
2006-06-10 Eddie O’Neal 8-12-2 New York, US W KO 1
2006-04-20 Tomas Padron 2-3-2 New York, US W UD 4
2006-03-16 Willie Cruz 3-5-0 New York, US W TKO 2

2005-08-04 Antwuan Hedgemond 0-0-0 New York, US W TKO 1
2005-06-09 Anthony Hunter 0-0-0 New York, US W TKO 1

RSR is now HIRING Boxing Writers

Exclusive Interview by “Bad” Brad Berkwitt “All 31 of my pro fights have been tough.”—Peter Quillin Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin is one of those fighters who are a workhorse.
