The charismatic Brit had a huge following and the name value that Floyd likes to face, but the loss has ruined that potential match up.

Floyd, sitting in his small cell, is probably eager to get back to his game. Boxing is where he rules and he will try to continue his domination of the sport when he returns, but who will be first on the agenda?

Miguel Cotto has been thrown around lately, but there is little to no demand for this fight. They have already fought and Floyd beat him clearly. If rematches begin where the first fight ends, Cotto will not only lose but will be stopped. In that first fight, it took a little time but Floyd discovered the uppercut and used it with regularity down the stretch. He knows he can land it now and would be throwing it at Cotto from the opening bell.

Saul Alvarez, 40-0-1, 29 KO’s, will be facing Josesito Lopez in September, and he may still be too green to face Mayweather. It would be too much of a risk for Alvarez. The reward would be enormous if he was able to pull off the upset, but slow and steady will win this race. With Pacquiao and Mayweather still, arguably, at #1 and #2 pound for pound, its best to let them settle it or move out of the way so the 22 year old superstar can take their spot. An Alvarez-Mayweather fight makes little sense business-wise but it is a fan’s dream.

Manny Pacquiao, 54-4-2, 38 KO’s, despite his defeat to Timothy Bradley, is still the guy that Floyd should fight. Pacquiao vs. Mayweather JR has been the most demanded fight in recent boxing history and the demand is still there. Time is not on the side of either man at this point and if it is going to happen, it must happen soon. Mayweather, JR., is holding most of the cards now. He is undefeated and Manny is coming off of a loss. It is the perfect time for this fight. If Manny were to beat Floyd, it would be the huge thing needed to make him that PPV entity again, and Floyd will make more money then he’s ever made before with this fight. It makes sense all around, but fighting Floyd comes with certain requirements. He doesn’t want to face a fighter that is taking PEDs. Manny, whether he is on steroids or not, is not comfortable with the random testing. That is an obstacle, but it may be one that is more likely to be overcome, considering Manny’s position in the sport.

There aren’t many other good options for Floyd at this point. He could face a young lion like James Kirkland, but it wouldn’t get the hype that he enjoys. The winner of Julio Cesar Chavez, JR., and Sergio Martinez is another possibility, but I don’t see Floyd that willing to face Martinez, the likely winner of that encounter.

The best fight and the only fight from most peoples’ perspective is Pacquiao. It’s time to put all the nonsense aside and get these two laced up and ready to go. The fans still want it, but they won’t want it much more if Pacquiao should lose his next fight. Manny needs to strike the deal and Floyd needs to possibly bend a little on his demands. If it’s not a PacMan showdown, there’s not much more for Mayweather to do.

What should Floyd Mayweather JR do next?

Fight Pacquiao

Fight Alvarez

Rematch Cotto

Fight the winner of Martinez-Chavez JR

Don't drop the soap in the shower room

Give a punch to the big belly of a Pacquiao groupie journalist

View Results

Loading ...

By Geno McGahee When Amir Khan came crashing down in his fight last Saturday night, the hopes of a fight between him and Floyd Mayweather, JR., 43-0, 26 KO’s, evaporated.
