Earnie “The Acorn” Shavers squares off against Donavan “Razor” Ruddock.

Shavers was one of the hardest punchers in Heavyweight history, scoring 68 knockouts in 74 victories. Included among his 24 first round victims were Jimmy Ellis, Ken Norton, and Jimmy Young. Making his matches even more interesting, Shavers had a suspect chin as evidenced by stoppage losses to Ron Lyle (TKO by 6) and Jerry Quarry (TKO by 1). Shavers challenged for the Heavyweight title twice, including a decision loss to Muhammad Ali in September 1977 and an 11th round TKO loss to Larry Holmes in September 1979. However, he gave both men everything they could handle, rocking Ali and nearly starching Holmes in the 7th round of their contest.

Razor Ruddock was a powerful contender from the 1990’s who is probably best known for his two fights with Mike Tyson in 1991. In their first contest, Ruddock suffered a controversial stoppage loss in the 7th round. He lasted the distance with Iron Mike in the rematch, providing him with some very uncomfortable moments before dropping a 12 round decision. Ruddock also scored victories former Heavyweight champions Mike Weaver (SD 10), Michael Dokes (TKO 4), Greg Page (TKO 8), and James “Bonecrusher” Smith (KO 7), ending his career with a more than respectable 40-5-1 (30 KOs). He didn’t have Earnie’s punching power but he was a much bigger man and more durable.

So here we go, it’s the Earnie Shavers who destroyed Ken Norton in September 1979 vs the version of Ruddock of went the distance with Tyson in June 1991. Who takes it? Let’s fight out.

LET’S SETTLE THIS IN THE RING

Fight night has arrived and a crowd of more than 15,000 has gathered at the Spectrum in Philadelphia to watch Earnie Shavers face Razor Ruddock. Shavers enters the ring first weighing 212 lbs and wears white trunks with black trim. Ruddock wears white trimmed with gold and weighs 235 lbs. Razor enjoys a three inch height advantage over Earnie (6’3’’ to 6’0’’). Michael Buffer issues the introductions and the bell rings for round one.

Ruddock is too big and strong for Earnie early as he keeps him at bay with power shots from the outside. A vicious left uppercut from Ruddock rocks Shavers as the first round comes to a close. Earnie looks for a way inside at the start of round two, however, he continues to eat serious leather. A wicked right from Ruddock catches Shavers on the chin and drops him to the canvas with just over one minute remaining. Shavers rises at the count of 7. Razor drives him to the ropes with a left hook. Earnie holds on for dear life. Ruddock continues to land hard shots but Shavers manages to survive the round.

Ruddock continues to have the better of the action over the first half of the third round. Shavers is already swollen under his left eye from the pounding he’s taken. However, lightning then strikes as Earnie lands a devastating right that sends Ruddock to the canvas in a heap. Ruddock gets up at the count of 8 but doesn’t have a leg under him. Shavers moves in for the finish while Razor desperately tries to hang on. Earnie batters Ruddock along the ropes, landing a vicious left hook. Only the ropes prevent Razor from falling. Ruddock survives the round, barely.

Shavers presses the attack as the bell rings for round four and lands a thunderous right which rocks Ruddock again early in the 4th. However, Razor responds with a left hook that wobbles Earnie. Both men are forced to grapple and hold over the next 20 seconds. They trade with impunity over the following minute as each looks for the blow that will end the fight. Who will land it? Shavers lands a vicious left hook to the jaw. Ruddock lands a hard right to the body which causes Earnie to wince. Shavers rocks Ruddock with an overhand right. Razor responds with a crackling left hook which snaps Earnie’s head back and then……………………………………with 30 seconds remaining in the round, Shavers lands a perfect right uppercut which leaves Ruddock face first on the canvas, out cold!

Earnie Shavers wins this one by knockout in the 4th round!!!!!!!!!!

[si-contact-form form=’2′]

Gene “The Boxing Machine” from Canada you asked for it and you will get your wish as our next mythical matchup features two hard punching Heavyweights who never captured the title.
