Following his victory over Amir Khan on May 7th, a truly impressive knockout, Alvarez’ enthusiasm about taking on Golovkin was all boxing fans plus all the online sportsbooks could talk about.

However, it doesn’t look like the boxing arena will be seeing an Alvarez Vs Golovkin match anytime soon, at least not until 2017. And that isn’t the only anticipated bout of 2016 that boxing fans can forget about.

This isn’t turning out to be the year in boxing that many people expected, especially with news hitting the air that, rather than a Golovkin fight, Alvarez will be doing battle with WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith in September.

Chris Eubank, JR., on the other hand, will have the distinct pleasure of taking on Golovkin, that is if his fight on Saturday night against Tom Doran pans out as expected. The parties involved in the Golovkin/Eubank fight are still working to make their bout a reality. Whether or not the fight will actually happen remains to be seen.

At the moment, all eyes are on Alvarez. As the primary pay-per-view attraction at the moment, Golden Boy Promotions is taking every possible step to keep his winning streak going. Going into the match with Liam Smith, Alvarez is the clear favorite, especially considering Smith’s rather lackluster record. Not only has he not defeated any boxers worth talking about but the only loss in his opponent’s career (Alvarez) was at the hands of Floyd Mayweather, and Alvarez has clearly grown since then.

Not that the fight is completely inconsequential to Alvarez. In defeating Smith, the Mexican has a chance to not only keep his perfect record but to earn a large paycheck in the process.

People are not exactly clamoring for the fight on Pay-per-View. None the less, Smith is expected to bring a sizeable British audience to the table.

Liam Smith falls at number eight among the junior middleweights. For a man whose last five fights have come at 155 pounds, it is worth noting that Alvarez’s fight with Smith for the Junior Middleweight title has a 154 pounds limit.

All in all, Alvarez’s fight with Smith won’t do anything of note for the Middleweight division; though the Middleweight division is in roughly appealing shape when compared to the heavyweight division.

It isn’t merely the fact that they canceled various fights in less than ten weeks but the nature of the fights that were canceled. The fact that Tyson Fury won’t defend his heavyweight titles in July still irks some fans, though the bout with Wladimir Klitschko has been postponed rather than canceled.

Admittedly, there are legitimate reasons behind the postponement. Tyson sprained his ankle terribly while running. He won’t be able to fight for at least six weeks. While the boxer made an attempt to apologize to his fans on social media, he has begun fielding some uncomfortable questions following reports from ESPN which suggested that his excessive partying, rather than an injury, was responsible for the postponement.

Not that people care, what with the Deontay Wilder/Alexander Povetkin bout having been canceled as well. Whether boxing fans will find solace in the Anthony Joshua/Dominic Breazeale fight remains to be seen.

The boxing world has been rife with anticipation over a Canelo Alvarez/Gennady Golovkin battle.
