BJ Penn and Randy Couture…<\/p>\n

Those two names are synonymous to greatness and history, both fighters captured two titles in different weight classes, a feat no one was able to attain since BJ Penn won the lightweight title in 2008. But in November, if all goes well, history will be written by Conor McGregor.<\/p>\n

The UFC just announced that lightweight kingpin Eddie Alvarez will face McGregor in New York City, this will mark Alvarez’s first title defense since destroying now-former champ Rafael Dos Anjos, Alvarez have been lobbying for a high-stakes bout with McGregor for weeks, at first UFC president Dana White denied that Alvarez-McGregor was in the works, he instead announced that negotiations were underway for Alvarez to fight undefeated Dagestani wrestler, Khabib Nurmagomedov, but the announcement today was not a shock at all, in fact it was expected.<\/p>\n

McGregor is clearly the draw, the moneymaker and the pay-per-view hit, the UFC and Alvarez understands that, no matter what his belief on McGregor’s fighting skills are, his popularity is soaring and undeniable, the end result is that everybody makes money.<\/p>\n

For McGregor, money is good but legacy is better. In Europe, McGregor held the featherweight and lightweight titles simultaneously and he wants that feat to be replicated in the UFC; BJ Penn and Randy Couture did hold 2 titles in 2 weightclasses but they never held it simultaneously, if McGregor does win versus Alvarez, McGregor will stand as the only champion to hold 2 titles simultaneously in the UFC. That feat is hard to accomplish, not just because of the quality of contenders but also the President’s attitude towards defending 2 belts at the same time, Dana White hates it and does not think a fighter would be able to balance such responsibility, luckily, McGregor is the moneymaker and his demand would surely be granted, not just because he is a superstar but also he made good with his promises, despite nagging injuries, McGregor has never pulled out from a fight and has consistently put on great fights, the huge pay-per-view buys don’t hurt either.<\/p>\n

Conor McGregor is a transcending the sport of mixed martial arts and yet he still chooses to fight than become a celebrity, despite his brash attitude, his hard-work and tenacity is rare in a business that gives you an excuse to complain. Win or lose, McGregor will make history.<\/p>\n
