Points are given when punches connect flush on the other fighter, whether damage is done or not. A fighter can “pitty pat” and “run” his way to victory on points even if he has been hurt more than the other fighter or not inflicted any damage onto his opponent. So, if I could change anything on the point scale there should be another category of “Damage Obtained” at the end of the tally from a scale of 1-10. “10” being that you got your butt kicked or “1” being that you escaped unscathed.

Secondly I would change all championship fights to 10 rounds instead of 12 for two reasons. First is to take out the first few rounds of a fighter pacing himself to be able to fight in the latter rounds. What’s the point of going more rounds to see who has the better endurance if your biding your time and back-pedaling for two rounds just so you can make it through to the 12th? In addition, going 10 rounds instead of 12 reduces the number of head shots decreasing the chance of Pugilistic Dementia or Parkinson’s Disease in my opinon.

Lastly there should be regulation on a boxer’s number of amateur fights. I’ve seen records where a fighter is in his late 20’s with almost 100 amateur fights! He was a “professional” amateur I guess, stuck in the “ammy zone” with no regulation to motivate him to improve him to pro. You should have to “do your business” or get off the pot! Your head is nothing to play around with and no one wants to see a grown man fighting teenagers! I feel the boxer should have the option of up to 40 sanctioned amateur fights, and that’s it. That doesn’t mean stop boxing totally, just be unable to compete in sanctioned bouts fighting men (boys) half your age.

With the number of fights as an amateur limited, the damage the fighter has taken at the end of the bout considered and the number of championship rounds shortened, this would force the fighter to take each round and each fight more seriously. If you knew you only had so many days to live, wouldn’t you make each one count? Same standard should be held in boxing regarding fights and rounds.

Try and recall the worst boxing decision you have ever seen. Would any of these changes have affected the outcome and changed the decision to have made it a fairer call? In the ones I can think of, most definitely.

[si-contact-form form=’2′]

By Shannon “Dallas” Hall How many of us have seen fighters win a decision when his face looks like meatloaf, and his opponent is barely bruised?
