Haha!) confirmation that Anthony Joshua, 21-0, 20 KO’s, will put his IBF, WBO and WBA world heavyweight titles on the line in a clash against Russian, Alexander Povetkin, 34-1, 20 KO’s. The fill I scheduled for September 22nd, 2018, and will take place at Wembley Stadium in London. Simply at face value and on paper alone, this matchup have the makings of something major in the sport of boxing.

Joshua last fought at Wembley Stadium in 2017, when he violently took the torch from Wladimir Klitschko in one of the best heavyweight fights of the past 25 years. 90,000+ supporters came out to see that fight in what was just a marvelous event all around. With the announced Povetkin match up, there is no reason that this fight won’t sell at or aroundt he same as Povetkin is a major name in Europe, and lines up to pose Joshua with his stiffest test to date.

All surely won’t be without controversy as Povetkin has repeatedly had issues with performance enhancing drugs, the most most notable of late resulting in his expected showdown with Deontay Wilder for the WBC world heavyweight title being scrapped in 2017. Nonetheless, Povetkin is a name that can conjure up probably the most interest heavyweight outside of Joshua fighting Wilder. But then again, Joshua seems to be able to sell out at least near 80,000 seats regardless of who he faces.

Joshua is coming off of a 12 round unanimous decision over Joseph Parker back in March. That fight wasn’t the most entertaining to watch, for a number of reasons, but it was Joshua taking on one of the best heavyweights available. Once again, we are being treated to a similar scenario. A win over Povetkin should answer some of the many questions people still have about Joshua’s abilities at this stage of his career. It’s easy to forget that he’s only been fighting as a professional for just around five years. During this time, in less than a year, he catapulted from promising prospect in 2017, to bonafide superstar.

He’ll have his opportunity to prove his worth against probably one of the most seasoned heavyweights in the sport at this point. Povetkin’s lone loss came at the hands of Wladimir Klitschko in 2013, at a time when Wlad was still the most dominant force in the division. Fast forward to now,Wlad is gone, and the heavyweight division is as very much open for grabs with a crop of decent talent as it was in the 90s. Eventually, all of the top guys will meet and no doubt, bodies will hit the floor.

We at Ringside Report will continue to monitor the situation and see how the entire card stacks up. Joshua already has an April 19th, 2019, date confirmed in what is expected to be the most anticipated clash at heavyweight since Lewis Vs Tyson, in Joshua Vs Wilder. As always in the sport of boxing, the cart never goes before the horse (I think I got that saying right). We will just have to wait on the outcome of September 22nd.

[si-contact-form form=’1′]

[AdSense-A] By Joshua “City” Brewer Earlier today, Matchroom Boxing and Eddie Hearn tweeted (sounds weird, huh?
