That said, in this case, I\u2019m not the one generating the chatter, I\u2019m only relaying it. Mikey Garcia, 39-0, 30 KO\u2019s, won his lightweight unification fight with Robert Easter, JR., 21-1, 14 KO\u2019s, on Saturday. The IBF and WBC world lightweight titles were at stake and Garcia remained consistently great. Make no mistake about it, Easter, JR., was a live dog, but Garcia had the biggest bite. Coming in, Garcia was the unquestioned and deserved favorite and proved that he\u2019s a solid bet once again. What\u2019s seemingly been the sort of topic of note for Garcia as of late is his open challenge to IBF world welterweight champion Errol \u201cThe Truth\u201d Spence, JR., 24-0, 21 KO\u2019s. <\/p>\n
Now, in fairness, nothing has been signed. It\u2019s all at this point, chatter. That said, Garcia hasn\u2019t been shy to speak on the subject and while he fought at 135 for this previous fight, a jump to 147 seemingly won\u2019t bother him. He\u2019s stated that he would like to test himself against someone like Spence, JR., who in his own words is ready for \u2018smoke\u2019 of any type.<\/p>\n
Spence, JR., is coming off of a first round KO over mandatory challenger Carlos Ocampo in June. Both fighters operate with no promoter and both have ties to boxing \u2018demigod\u2019 Al Haymon. Spence, JR., completed a successful promotion with Dallas Cowboys owner and Billionaire Jerry Jones for his last fight. Garcia has been linked to Dana White and Eddie Hearn, but nothing is official as of yet.<\/p>\n
Both fighters seem to be about action at the moment, so why not? Will it be man down? Garcia is confident of his abilities and after the pre and post fight interviews and discussions for the Easter, JR., fight, it\u2019s going to be hard to walk things back. Spence, JR., was on had in Los Angeles, and spoke with the Showtime boxing team after the fight and made it clear that he was ready to take on Garcia in his next fight and that he didn\u2019t see anything what worried him. While he acknowledged Garcia is a skilled boxer, he also noted the fact that 147 is where the heavy hitters reside.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m sure many will have something to say about that. Spence, JR., would likely open as the favorite for the bookmakers but I could certainly see the odds a close as possible on fight night. Garcia\u2019s team would rather he challenge a different welterweight to get a feel for the division as opposed to jumping straight to the guy considered by many (myself included) the #1 welterweight in the world. That\u2019s said, Garcia is a fighter in the true form. There have been those that rose from lightweight to welterweight to win the title, Homicide Hank comes to mind, so it isn\u2019t out of the question for Garcia to prove successful.<\/p>\n
Is this just wishful thinking on Garcia\u2019s part? Maybe we\u2019ll know sooner than later. I\u2019m intrigued. I favor \u2018The Truth\u2019 but won’t count Garcia out until counted out (pun). That\u2019s why they fight the fights. Who wins this match up at welterweight?<\/p>\n
