Ready to Expose Julio Cesar Chavez JR: Marco Antonio Rubio Speaks to RSR

Exclusive Interview by Marc Anthony

“He should be talking about Sergio Martinez, Kelly Pavlik, or Manny Pacquiao but he is looking to simply find easy fights.”– Marco Antonio Rubio

Marco Antonio Rubio has been fighting for over a decade and has amassed an impressive record of 51-5-1, 41 KO’s. He has been a multiple champion of various organizations. He is the mandatory for the WBC Middleweight title. He is known as “El Veneno” the poison for his hard punching style. Marco comes with a fan friendly style and is a proud Mexican fighter.

Now with a great opportunity for all fans and as Bob Arum has said, “Mexico is one country that has a great boxing tradition and really now boxing is booming in Mexico” adding “17 percent of the population in the United States is Hispanic of which the overwhelming majority is Mexican origin.” One would think that a Rubio-Chavez JR fight would generate great fan interest.

RSR sits with Marco Antonio Rubio to discuss a potential match up with Julio Cesar Chavez, JR., the current WBC Middleweight Champion.

MA: Has there been any contact with Julio Cesar Chavez JR.’s team?

Yes. We have been in contact with their entire team. We are working so they can accept the fight. I am the official mandatory for him. All the promoters have spoken with Top Rank and they know that I am ready to fight him at any moment’s notice.

MA: What were your impressions on Julio’s last performance?

To me…he left many questions in regards to his boxing but he came in with great physical conditioning and counter striking, but he is not his father.

MA: What problems do you think you will give Julio?

Well, I hit very hard. And I have always hurt my opponents. I think with Julio who has that face forward style of boxing like a bull, he will be easy for me to hit him. And like I said, I consider myself a hard puncher and I don’t think he would be able to handle me.

MA: Why should Julio fight you?

I think he should fight me because I am his official mandatory fight. It will also be a very interesting fight between two Mexicans fighting for the world championship. And I think that he should be thinking about giving great fights to fight fans not only just be a name.

MA: In your opinion do you think Julio has been protected?

Yes, I think he is protected and many have said that he got a gift decision. It was an even fight but, to me, he did not win it. They put a boxer who does not hit hard and someone who hasn’t fought anybody. They just placed him there when they took it away from Martinez. It was well planned for Julio to become a world champion.

MA: What are the people of Mexico saying about a potential matchup between you and Julio?

They want to see us fight is what the people are saying.

MA: Speaking of Sergio Martinez, what is your impression of him?

Sergio is a great champion. He is a fighter who has fought the best in the world and has demonstrated his skill against Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams, and Kelly Pavlik. With Margarito, he fought ten years ago or so and lost but he has demonstrated that he is the best in the world and he has fought against the best in the world. He is the real champion and should be still the real champion. Now that I am the official mandatory to the champion, I want to fight the champion be it Martinez or Julio, but right now its Julio Cesar Chavez.

MA: Why hasn’t this fight been made?

Well, there are many rumors and talk about him avoiding me and I hope that he is willing to fight me as I am his mandatory.

MA: Do you feel it would be a good idea for this fight to happen in Mexico?

Yes of course. I think it would be a great gift to all Mexican fans that Julio was to fight me in Mexico. It would be a great fight and I don’t think there has been a middleweight championship fight for the WBC in Mexico. I think it would be a great fight for our fans in Mexico since both Julio and I are proud Mexicans. I think this fight has to be made for the fans of boxing not for his personal interest.

MA: Your message to Julio

Julio, do not avoid me…fight your official mandatory… Me. He doesn’t need to be looking for other opponents I am here and I am his official mandatory fight. I don’t know why he is looking for other fighters and he isn’t even looking for great fighters to fight. He should be talking about Sergio Martinez, Kelly Pavlik, or Manny Pacquiao but he is looking to simply find easy fights.
