Casey Anthony: MENTALLY COMPETENT TO STAND TRIAL – WHAT IT MEANS

By Geno McGahee

The Casey Anthony trial resumed today when a judge ruled that the defendant is competent to remain on trial for the first degree murder of her 2 year old child, Caylee. The trial was put on hold over the weekend when a “legal matter” arose and it would later come out that Casey was examined by three different psychologists to determine her ability to go through with the trial. The Defense filed the motions.

All three psychologists agreed that she was fit for trial. “Based upon the reports that the court has reviewed, the court will find that the defendant is competent to proceed,” Judge Perry stated today, the 29th day of testimony.

The fact that she was examined may hurt her case. There may be the message to the jury that there is the belief that she is not mentally right, and that will help the Prosecution. Casey is accused of killing her 2 year old daughter and dumping her body into the woods near the Anthony home. The Defense contends it was an accidental death. Caylee drowned and Casey’s father, George, attempted to cover it up.

The question in court now is: Will Casey take the stand in her own defense? She is seen as a cold person by many due to her courtroom demeanor and they may take the gamble to paint her as a tortured soul, victim of molestation, and a good person that just made some bad decisions. I don’t know if they would risk it.
