Alistair Overeem Vs Brock Lesnar: IT IS ON – UFC BLOCKBUSTER

By Sean Farrell

Alistair Overeem, the #2 heavyweight in the world, will finally make his UFC debut next month in a blockbuster tilt against Brock Lesnar, with the two squaring off in a five-round, non-title fight for the main event of UFC 141.

The winner of the fight will be granted the first shot at Junior dos Santos’ recently-won UFC heavyweight title, but should the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion win, he won’t be gaining anything he didn’t already have in the first place. In a recent blog he wrote for Yahoo! Sports, Overeem explained that he was given a shot at the winner of the recent Cain Velasquez-Junior dos Santos heavyweight title fight upon signing with the UFC, but that he turned it down in order to stay active as a true fighter would.

The 31-year-old “Demolition Man” is interested only in proving that he’s the best fighter in the world and he sees defeating Lesnar as a something he must do to achieve that goal, at least with Americans thinking Brock is a phenom when he is nothing more than a brute. He knows that it won’t be an easy task, but he’s confident in his ability to defeat the former pro wrestler.

“I don’t underestimate this man,” Overeem wrote of Lesnar. “Winning UFC belt from Randy Couture in his fourth pro MMA fight and defending it against Frank Mir and Shane Carwin was very impressive. I am also impressed by Lesnar’s fighting spirit; he has twice come back from a very serious illness and fought very tough opposition right away. He obviously has a lot of confidence in himself in fighting me after more than a year out and surgery on his stomach, and I admire that about him, but I am even more confident in myself. I will knock this guy out.

“He is great at takedowns and controlling people on the ground, but I can stop his takedowns and he is no match for me on the feet. I am going to rip Brock Lesnar apart, piece by piece.”

If Lesnar can’t bully him, that is exactly what will happen ala Todd Duffee…Stuff takedown, knee, hook, turtle…

Overeem and Lesnar will meet at UFC 141 this Friday, December 30, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada
