RSR Boxing Results: ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights

By Geno McGahee

WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Beibut Shumenov, 10-1, 6 KO’s, defended his title successfully against Vyacheslav Uzelkov, 21-1, 14 KO’s, outworking the challenger en route to a unanimous decision by scores of 118-108 (twice) and 117-109.

In the opening round, Shumenov came out strong but a strong left hook put him on the canvas. Uzelkov was relaxed but became too relaxed, unable to get any offense going from this point on. In the third round a 1-2 landed and would put the challenger down, evening the score. The awkward Shumenov kept moving forward and landing punches and pushing the challenger around the ring, landing some, missing some, but throwing nonstop.

Uzelkov was discouraged and also seemed to have some problem with his vision as he continually blinked his eyes over and over again. The strength and awkward style of the champion proved far too much for Uzelkov.
