Georges St. Pierre Vs Anderson Silva & More MMA News

By Kevin Nelson

UFC News and Notes

Fresh off his victory over Josh Koscheck at UFC 124, Georges St. Pierre is rumored to be moving up to middleweight.

With few competitors in the welterweight division, St. Pierre has beaten the top contenders in the division. The two top contenders are BJ Penn and John Fitch who are scheduled to face one another at UFC 127 in Australia.

St. Pierre has already beaten them both and, in the case of BJ Penn, twice. My bet is GSP is going to face Jake shields. With Dana White assuring Shields after his victory over Martin Kampman of getting the next title shot, this match may be next (He has been known to change his mind from time to time).

It is the most logical option at this point for GSP, who has not faced Shields yet.

With notable victories over Dan Henderson, Jason Mayhem Miller and Robbie Lawler, the former Strikeforce Middleweight Champ has not lost in 6 years and is on a 15 fight winning streak.

Although the matchup we all want to see is GSP and Anderson Silva; two champions who have reigned along time in the UFC, we won’t likely see that matchup until next fall.

With Silva scheduled to face Vitor Belfort and Chael Sonnen, he has yet too fully clean out his division.

Chael Sonnen, after testing positive for steroids by the California State Athletic Commission, had his suspension reduced to six months. Due to a condition known as “Hypogonadism,” Sonnen is required to receive testosterone injections twice a week.

He is eligible to fight in March 2011.

With the next Ultimate fighter show scheduled to film in January. Sonnen is rumored along with Wanderlei Silva to coach. Other fighters mentioned Urijah Faber and Miguel Torres as well as Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar.

My bet is on Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva for a number of reasons: Silva is coming off an injury and Sonnen, a suspension.

Sonnen is one of the biggest trash talkers in mix martial arts and Wanderlei Silva is one of the most popular. Former boxing Middleweight, Super Middleweight, and Cruiserweight Champion, James “Lights Out” Toney on MMA Fanhouse stated that he will fight MMA again.

The opponent he is targeting is Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Although after the loss to Couture, Dana White said he will not be promoting James “Lights Out” Toney again.

Strikeforce News and Notes

The current Strikeforce Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem won the K1 Grand Prix in Japan.

It is what may be considered a first to be known as a Mixed Martial Arts Champion and a kickboxing champion at the same time. Congrats to Overeem.

Now if we can only see him in some more fights in the United States…

Strikeforce, which has an agreement with Dream that showcases the Dream Promotion fighters in MMA matches against Strikeforce fighters, has been largely successful.

One of the most appealing reasons that mixed martial artists choose to sign with Strikeforce is because they allow there fighters to fight in other promotion.

Overeem is one of those fighters and is hugely popular overseas more so than in North America. Strikeforce challenger event will be on January 7 in Nashville, Tennessee.

One of the fighters on the card will be Ovince St. Preux who will be fighting incredibly for the third time in six weeks.

The headline will be the rising welterweight contender Tyron Woodley, 7-0, facing Traec Saffiedine, 10-2.

Also will be the Two-Time Olympian Dan Cormier, 6-0, as he will be on the card as he faces Devin Cole, 18-8-1, in a heavyweight battle.
