Chris Arreola Explosive Results on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights

By Geno McGahee

Chris Arreola, 30-2, 26 KO’s, scored a first round stoppage over Joey Abell, 27-5, 26 KO’s, after taking some serious shots before landing with a right hand and some follow up shots to convince the referee to stop it at 2:18 of the first round.

Abell showed the defensive liabilities in Arreola’s game, landing the majority of the shots in the first 90 seconds of the round, but the strength and class difference became apparent late in the round and a combination of punches put Abell in jeopardy, quickly rescued by the referee in a questionable stoppage, although it’s hard to imagine Abell recovering and overcoming Arreola.

Arreola came in at 249 pounds, insisting that he is in better shape, but he still looked too heavy and the fans still want to see if he can live up to his potential. At 249, he still seems too overweight to compete with the top guys.

It was a mismatch and Arreola did what he had to do, but his screams of “I’m back,” need to be taken in context with the opposition. When he moves up to a better fighter, it will be interesting to see if he can perform as well as he did tonight.
