Life After Manny Pacquiao: Marco Antonio Barrera & Boxing Weekend Results

By Geno McGahee

Marco Antonio Barrera, 67-7, 43 KO’s, returned to the ring with a knockout over the lightly regarded Jose Arias, 15-2, 9 KO’s, stopping him in the second round. Arias came out strong, but was floored quickly and another knockdown in the second round would end the night. Barrera, at 37, has put together two victories since his defeat to Amir Khan in 2009. With Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez fighting in the near future, Barrera may find his way into a rematch with either or may even find a title shot considering his name value.

IBF Cruiserweight Champion, Steve Cunningham, 24-2, 12 KO’s, fended off the game challenge of Enad Licina, 19-3, 10 KO’s, by unanimous decision of scores 118-110, 117-111, and 115-113. The fight was a lot closer than the scorecards indicated, with so many close rounds, but Cunningham clearly won and can now move on.

Arthur Abraham, 32-2, 25 KO’s, former middleweight champion, got back on the winning trail with a two round stoppage of Stjepan Bozic, 24-5, 15 KO’s, but he didn’t get much work in. In the second round, Bozic injured his right hand and it was over. Abraham is attempting to get some momentum going into his bout with Andre Ward, the WBA Super Middleweight Champion in the Showtime Super Six Tournament.

American heavyweight “Fast” Eddie Chambers, 36-2, 18 KO’s, controlled fringe contender Derric Rossy, 25-3, 14 KO’s, winning a clear unanimous decision by scores of 120-107, 117-110, and 115-112. This was a disappointment for Rossy who had won his last seven fights and earned his way into contender status. Chambers was just too skilled for Rossy and can now try to get back into the title picture.
